Please say a prayer for my grandson, Dalton. Some of you may have met him at the Billville Feed in Port Clinton in '03. He got the trail name "yo-yo" at that event.
He has had kidney and bladder problems for a year and most recently is in the hospital because of renal failure. They are doing dialysis and tests. The results of the tests will be available today form the doctor but yesterday he said that he doesn't think he needs to see the results. He believes that Dalton will need dialysis until we find him a kidney transplant.
Attached are some pics of Dalton at the feed in '03. He is 15 years old now.

Thank you to everyone for participating in the prayer circle. I do wholeheartedly believe in that.
He is still in hospital. Not eating. Another dialysis scheduled for the morning.
Catherters are causing him much pain. Not any more update from doctor today. From what I know from being at hospital and what Tina (my daughter) has told me the kidney specialist is trying to get things under control so they can go to next step. Which would be to send him home. Then the two seperated parents decide what kind of dialysis to proceed with until they find him a kidney.
That's the short version of these long days and nights.
Thank you to all of the trail family. What a totally awesome family to be a member of. I will update again soon.

Dalton is having another round of dalysis now. He was given morphine last evening for the headaches so he could sleep. Still no appetite which doctors say is a side effect of the blood pressure medicine he is taking. Doctor talked to Tina this morning. It is definite that his kidneys will not recover. He will be on a lot of medications which will be a complicated schedule of medicating. He will no longer be able to take any over the counter medications for colds, flus, or headaches as they may react to the medications he will be on. One of the medications is for his immune system which will be affected from all of this. Meeting scheduled at 5 today with the doctor to make the plans for his dialysis once he goes home. Then the search for a kidney for him.

I asked a lot of questions of my daughter Tina yesterday concerning Dalton. Some to clarify what I knew and some that were questions from others.

He is having renal dialysis now 3 times a week at the hospital. He is not on any kidney transplant list nor have they started testing for possible relatives that match. That is because there is a slim chance that his kidneys may recover enough to not need the transplant from this month of renal dialysis.

If there is no progress towards recovery of the kidneys he will have the scheduled operation to insert the other dialysis catheter in his stomach and will then begin dialysis nightly at home. At that time testing will begin for relatives matching for transplant. If no willing relatives match he will then be put on the transplant list.

He had an appointment with the heart doctor last week. He said that the walls of the heart are thicker than normal but not enough to warrant concern at this point.

He is on a complicated schedule of meds and we have to keep records of everything he eats so that his numbers for sodium, potassium and phosphorous do not go over 2,000 mg each on any given day. The food he misses most is pizza. He can eat a half a pizza by hmself and he is only allowed one slice on any given day.

Here is a pic I took of him on Monday June 10.

06-11-2008, 13:18
Sorry to hear about all of this.

Why don't you talk to the MD about the possibility of letting him have unlimited pizza as a one-time thing the evening prior to dialysis? I'm not sure if this is possible with dialysis, but I have had MDs let a diabetic patient have a reasonable "treat" meal while hospitalized since they were on close glucose monitoring and were getting sliding scale insulin. It might be worth inquiring about.

Although YoYo (Dalton) appears fine to look at him and is in good spirits, doctors have confirmed that his kidneys will not recover above the 5% function. He complains a bit about having to write everything down, but understands the reasons and seriousness of his condition.
His potassium levels were high one day last week but two days later were back in okay range.
Tuesday, the 17th YoYo, myself and Marco Solo ('06-'07er visiting) went on a hike attempting the climb from the base of the mountain to Hawk Rock. Dalton made it but I had to stop and wait for him to come back down about 2/10 from the top. I just couldn't go any more because of the arthritis in my knees. Any way, we had a great time. Yo Yo especially on the way down when he was in the front and sped down the trail. Here are some pics.

Dalton and parents were at training for his peritoneal dialysis today, when he started having severe pain in his back. He is now in a hospital room having tests done for the reason for the pain. They have him on morphine. The doctors are stumped but believe it is from an infection. The reason for the infection and the location they are trying to determine.:(

Dalton's Doctors are discussing if they should remove one kidney. Apparently, the same kidney keeps causing problems with infections.
He cannot be put on a donor list until they get two things stable. One is his blood pressure and I forget the other.
I am worried about his mental state as is my daughter. She talked to their peritoneal instructor today and she is going to arrange counseling for him. The peritoneal classes are being interrupted until they get kidney infection solved.

Just talked to my daughter Tina. She asked that I thank everyone for their prayers. They are much appreciated.
They have decided not to take the "bad kidney" because it is still producing urine. They have him on antibiotics. His kidneys will eventually not produce any urine once he is doing the peritoneal catheter.
His potasium levels are too high. They tested him twice for that. And since those levels did not drop they are doing renal dialysis again today. They are meeting with the dietician today to get more instructions on his diet.
The reason his kidneys went bad is because of his nonneurogenic bladder. So, because he will still have the same bladder problems when he gets a new kidney the doctors are not putting him on the list until they are sure that he has become responsible enough to handle it. That includes hygiene and catheters. Even though it appears he understands the seriousness of his condition the doctors feel he is not accepting enough of the responsibility yet. As his doctor says his parents are there to help and guide him but the responsibility is his.
He received permission to take showers after Tina told the doctor he really wants to take showers and she feels he will keep himself cleaner if he can do that. The doctor then talked to the nurses and came up with a solution of how to protect the renal port so he can shower. They have to completely seal his renal port so that no water at all gets in there when he takes a shower. That should help because he is not doing well keeping himself clean enough with the sponge baths. He has continually complained about not being able to take a shower.
If all goes well he will discontinue the renal catheter on Monday and then start peritoneal catheter at home on Tuesday. And then in about a week, they will remove the renal catheter if everything is going fine with the peritoneal catheter.
I prayer that Dalton can gain the strength and willpower to become more responsible about his hygiene and health responsibilities.
I don't want to hear again that he says, you should just put me down like a sick dog. Please help him, Lord.

Dalton's recent stay in the hospital turned out okay. They determined the reason for the pain was a kidney infection. I had a lot of information from my daughter daily about what was going on. But today, I got to spend some quality time with Dalton and more of my questions were answered while talking to him. He is doing well and appears to be handling all of this pretty well.
I did have a "grandmother talk" with him today about cleanliness. He shook hands with me on a promise to not toss clothing or bath towels on the floor. It may seem something very simple but it is not "normal" for a boy of his age to do. I tried to impress him with the fact that he is a very special person with special needs right now and that even though it is not things he would normally think about but he needs to. So he shook hands on a promise to not toss anything on the floor that may touch his body again.
And on to some more fun stuff.....
We talked about music and he enjoyed the Pandora site I turned him onto. He also enjoyed looking at the pics and videos on the Wheres Karl site. He was like "WOW" alot while looking that over and kept saying I'd like to hike that! And we plan on doing some hiking on Thursday.
Happy trails to all of you and thank you so much for your prayers from Dalton, My daughter Tina and myself. They are very much appreciated during this challenge.

Here is an update on Dalton from his last appointment with the doctor via my daughter Tina.

"He got the Hickman catheter out. Dr said he was proud of Dalton how well he is doing but in the grand scheme of things two weeks are nothing, to keep it up. Changed a few more meds around, lowered another of his BP medications since it was still too low. His BP was better over the weekend. Took him off one of the laxatives too, Dr said that 4 bowel movements a day was too much, wants Dalton to have one or two good bowel movements a day. He did give me a number to call to start the transplant process.Or at least the evaluations for transplant. I will let you know more details as I get them for testing and whatnot."

From my daughter today in response to me asking how he's doing:

"Dalton is good, dialysis is going pretty good, for the most part. He still has some slow drains and fills but that seems to be getting better since we started injecting heparin into the bags twice a week. His last check on his blood was all good, his hemoglobin is still as high as it should be and all the waste products are low so the dialysis is doing it’s job. He will be going on the transplant list. I have the coordinators card that is the contact for testing for a live donor. I don’t have it with me today but when I remember to bring it in with me I will send you the information, you can pass on her name and number to anyone who is willing to be tested. A or O blood type."

Dalton is doing well. He had a rough morning and is better now that they removed the urinal catheter. They hope to send him home on Monday if all his blood levels are good and he is breathing well. The have a measuring thing for breathing and want his level to be at 1000 daily. Doctor wants him up and moving around to help that level to reach that #. They gave him some medication for too high potassium this morning.
Since his kidney problems developed because of a defective bladder he will have to continue to use the urethra catheter to keep the new kidney functioning. I pray for him to have the strength and will power to do as the doctors direct. He will continue to have special needs and I know he is not happy about that. He hates that catheter!
He will have to be on a special diet but not as restrictive as before.
My daughter will be going to classes to learn more about the kdney transplant today.
I will update more as I learn more.

My grandson Dalton is back in the hospital. I was worried today as I tried to reach my daughter through email and phone and was getting nowhere. About 4 pm she left me a message which explains the reason. Dalton admitted today. Fever and chills.
As I understand, he has been on an additional 11 medications since the transplant. Some of which are to basically shut down his immune system so he doesn't reject the kidney. As a result if his body shows systems of a cold or flu it could be that or the same symptoms are because his body could be rejecting the kidney.
I have been working all evening so could not go to hospital. I will be tossing and turning all night I am sure till I hear some news.

Hopefully Dalton will be home today. The fever and the chills went away after one day in the hospital. They do not know what caused it. Kidney is functioning properly. At first they intended to only keep him a few days to make sure the fever did not come back but there was an abnormal bacteria in his urine. They did a biopsy, waiting for the results on that. He is okay just bored. Wants to go home.

He was sprung from hospital on Monday. He had to go get blood drawn Tuesday because they weren’t happy with his white blood cell count, it was too low. They gave him a shot to boost the level before he left the hospital. The coordinator called yesterday they want Dalton to get an angiogram today to check the blood vessels and connections they made. His creatine is back up to 3.5 so that’s why the angiogram.

My daughter, Tina left a message this afternoon. His urine test showed e-coli. They will be doing more tests. Tina believes he will be in hospital 2-3 days.

Still praying, hope life starts to smooth out for him.

I got to spend some time with him this evening with his Mom (my daughter) in the grocery store while we shopped! Dalton (yo-yo) is looking stronger than I have seen him for quite a while. I feel not so worried tonight. But I have to keep in mind as he said to me that he is just trying to stay out of hospital. So, I am hoping that the kidney function and anti-rejection will soon level off and the visits to the hospital will soon end.
I mentioned to him about going on a day hike again. He responded positively again I think that is because he feels stronger. I hope we can work our schedules out that we can hike together soon!
Thank you for all your prayers.
I BELIEVE!

Just received this in an email from my daughter.
"Dalton is in Hershey Med. He has fluid on one of his kidneys, not the transplanted one. Don't really know much more than that right now."

Dalton is out of hospital. Still in pain bt not as bad. Fluid is infection of the non-functional old kidney. Doctors considering removing it because once it has become infected once the chances of repeat infection increase.
