Or you could just carry peppercorns and crush them.

You could just put the corns on a small flat rock and crush 'em with the side of your knife blade or another rock. Seems like a bit of a hassle to me, but hey, if it'll make your hike more fun go for it.

Another tempting gear gadget, dammit! Man, nothing like fresh ground pepper on about anything for me. And the smell of that fresh grind of pepper, nothing better for my nose buds, except maybe fresh ground coffee, lol.

Worth every penny and ounce. When not hiking, mine lives in my kitchen filled with specialty peppercorns. Used it on my hike through the Northern section of the Smokies last week.

I think the mill in Sarbar's photo is this one (http://www.rei.com/search?query=pepper+mill&button.x=7&button.y=10) from REI. I haven't bothered to get one. What I do is use the mill I keep in the kitchen to grind pepper, and put that along with other spices into a small container. Works for section hiking, anyway.

FWIW I don't buy ground pepper at the grocery; doesn't even begin to compare with fresh ground.

Two Speed, yes the one in my photo is the GSI Pepper Mill. It has become a pretty good seller on my site :)

Just looked at your first post in detail. Either I gotta start paying more attention or I gotta get new glasses.

Think I'll blame the glasses. ;)

I wouldn't take something like that on a thru but, hey, on a weekend or even a week long excursion, why not? Bon appetite.

McCormick Spice has a small Pepper Mill (http://www.mccormick.com/productdetail.cfm?id=6565), about $2.00.
