i never reallized how many more nobo's there are than us sobo's, im jealous that you all get to leave that much earlier and that you finish on katahdin whereas we finish on springer... but ill be happy to not battle the crowds too
Oh, here's the McDonalds secret for thru hikers. The double cheesburger has the highest fat, calorie, and protein per cost of anything. More than the fish, chicken, nuggets, or other burgers. Plus it's a dollar each. Then get a large fry, because per cost it's also the highest of the three fry options. Typical lunch was 4 double cheeseburgers, large fry, and sweet tea. Less than $10 and something like 5k calories. Just thought I would share this since we spant many hours one day figuring it out. Some of my buddies did what they called the "dollar menu challenge" which is eating at least one of everything on the dollar menu.
Trail Name: waiting to be given one on the trail
Direction: Southbound
Start Date:Mid-late may. whenever they open baxter this year
Approach trail: i have no idea what this means... any help?
For those starting in the south, there is a trail from Amicola to Springer which some folks hike and some don't, just hiking from a parking lot up .9 mi to Springer instead. For SOBOs, such as yourself, there are several options. You can hike the Hunt trail up to Katahdin (which is probably the most popular way) or you can do another trail such as Abol or even the Knife's Edge (mostly crazy people do this one).

I figured I'd sign myself up since I did make the decision to fully commit for it, however finances will be all that stands in my way from here until then I need to get enough money for the trip, and to pay off loans while I am on the trip... If money issues flow correctly, (working two full time jobs at the time), then I will be ready to go.

Thru-hiked the AT north bound in 2007. I enjoyed thru hiking the AT so much in 2007 that I have decided to yo-yo (GA-ME-GA) the trail this coming year. I carry a travel banjo with me, so if anyone out there is planning on carring a guitar, mandolin, or fiddle with them and enjoys playing bluegrass music needs to contact me. What better way to hike the Appalachian Trail then to play appalachian mountain music along the way.

I'm thankful for the information about a thru hike from this website. I've
decided it is the time for me to get reorientated after a mid life
crisis, and having been a highway design engineer for more than two
decades. I don't feel I have too much enthusiasm in it. I talked to my
manager a few months ago regarding a quit or leave of absence when
I start the thru hike in April. The arrangement will be finalized before
I leave. An Amtrak ticket was purchased departing from Newark Penn Sation
to Gainesville, GA on April 29, 2009. I'm still determined to do it
despite the more than average raise I received today.
Life is just too short. Now I'm looking for some real good time for myself.
Thank everybody who contributed helpful knowledge about this adventure.
P.S. I know I can't quit till it's done.

Estimated Start Date: First Week in March

Why Caterfly ? Caterfly is a coined word to describe myself. I'll be
starting as a pudgy, slow "caterpiller" persistantly inching my way
toward Katahdin, and hopefully by then, when I reach the summit...I'll
fly away lookin' like a beautiful fit and trim "butterfly"....So, I
just combined the two words caterpiller and butterfly and came up with
"Caterfly". Its a hopeful, optimistic trailname to encourage me to keep
goin' when the goin' gets rough. I'm pretty determined, however, so
have confidence I can withstand whatever it takes !....That is, if
the world don't fall apart before then.

Cheeley? The Y? You are gonna have a great hike.--Kinnickinic
I have laid deeper plans that insure this year will be my Nobo AT hike and PCT will be waiting another year.
I cant wait. When I was Sobo I loved the weather(even the rain in Maine) but I very much am beginning to be a believer in the Nobo hike. Ending with Vermont, New Hawmpshire and Maine just seems like so much more to look forward to than Springer. I just can't wait to get to see all the places I went this year again, and see what I missed.
I haven't looked into my exact times yet, but I am kicking off on the date that puts me closest to Greensboro NC April 12.
It looks like im leaving sometime mid to late march.

I suppose going up the Abol slide counts for you detail oriented people.
The idea of heading up the slide on Day 1 isn't exactly my cup of tea. I came down the slide, but sure didn't go up it.
I suppose going up the Abol slide counts for you detail oriented people.
The idea of heading up the slide on Day 1 isn't exactly my cup of tea. I came down the slide, but sure didn't go up it.Isn't the whole approach trail thing about taking a different trail up instead of backtracking and tagging the sign. Abol trail mostly does that.
I have climbed Katahdin twice going up the Abol and down the Hunt. I would think it would be worse going down than heading up it.

Honestly didnt know what a "trail approach is" I figured its where you approach the trail lmao.. who cares anyway......Im not up to date on the terminology of this forum or the trail. Hell i cannt remember yesterday lol!
Peace
Near springer there is a trail that leads up that is actually called the "approach trail".
Or you can skip it and be dropped off in the parking lot at the top.
Or so that is what everyone says, I haven't been there yet.

I'm not thru-hiking, but section hiking, and expect to log a good many miles this year with my two kids (age 9 and 11) so I thought I'd post on here as I'll likely run into some of you out there.
I did Harper's Ferry to Dripping Rock Wayside (south of Waynesboro, VA) this past summer.
Will start at Springer Mountain on Good Friday and hike north for 11 days. In early June we will pick up where we left off and continue North for 2 weeks. In mid July we will once again pick up where we left off and head north for 3 weeks. So six weeks all together, so hoping we can knock off at least 400 miles of trail. Plus weekend overnighters in various parts of Virginia and Maryland. I hope to see you guys and we will bring some trail magic whenever we hit the trail.

Approach Trail. I'm hitching from Gainsville, so unless I get a ride to that gap (forgot the name of it) I imagine so.
I planned to do the southern half of the trail and did just that- with much yellow blazing and a bit of pink blazing (and lots of good times). This year, I'm a lot more serious and am planning to go all the way.
I did half the trail for 1200 bucks last year and this year I intend to do the whole thing for around 1000. I also don't plan to carry a pack (it was always nearly empty last year anyway) and make everything myself 'cept my chacos (and maybe some snazzy REI clothes).
Might bring some teenagers along, like last year, as emergency rations.

I got divorced last year, I lost my job, I own nothing and I can't live with the rents forever, so I'm using the last of my money to gear up, hit the trail and resupply along the way. I don't know what I'll do when I get to Maine, but I'm hoping that everything will be revealed to me on the trail.
Trailname: Kindman
Start date: est. April 12
Direction: NOBO
Approach Trail: already did it, will probably do it again
I hiked in 2005, and did around 1200 miles, I can't wait to get back on the trail, see you soon.:D

Add me to the list! Bought a plane ticket and made a reservation with Hiker's Hostel for the 28th so I'm pretty much committed for the 29th. Between now and then there's still a ton of planning to do (ok, I procrastinated but I do better when it's the last minute), I'm taking a trip to Boston, and I really need the next couple weeks to recover from my trip to the Daks this past weekend.
