i didnt know if i should put this question here or on homemade forum or on lightweight forum. the S3 can feel free to move it if necessary.

has anyone done any substantial amount of time hiking with the steel mesh (coleman lantern globe) woodstove idea? im wondering how it fares over time.

I hiked for 6 weeks many years ago with nothing but the old hiker's grill (small grill top with fold out legs) as my 'stove'. It worked well as long as the fuel wasn't wet. It was a pain to get lit in wet weather. If you go this route, I would strongly recommend a magnesium fire starter (http://www.survival-gear.com/magnesium-fire-starter.htm)
