I've got a pair of LLBean low-top trail shoes right now. Nothin' fancy. $50. Heavier and more support than trail runners, lighter than boots, and they stick good on wet rocks.

But....Did someone say shoes?

Brooks Adrenaline ASRs...they rock.Wow! Thanks for reminding me of the early shoes I wore in my running days! Brooks are great shoes . . . I'm going to try a pair for daily walking, perhaps even hiking!

I have a pair of Merrell Chameleons that I have been hiking in for nigh on 3 years. With some in soles, they are very comfortable and they still look surprisingly new! They make for a nice happy medium between big, clunky boots and running shoes with little to no support.

There are several good brand cross-trainer shoe makers (Vasque, Merrell, Keen, etc.). The difference between a cross-trainer and a running shoe is Vibram soles on the trainer. Since all our feet are different, go with the one that gives the best fit for your feet, regardless of brand name.
