View Full Version : dragon's tooth
Hi all,
A friend of mine who goes to VT recommended that I see dragon's tooth while I'm in the area.
Does anyone know the best place to park where I could hike to dragon's tooth and back in either 10 miles or under? I have looked online extensively. It seems the 311 route is about 16 miles round trip unless I'm mistaken.
Worst comes to worse I can try to get a friend to pick me up, but I would prefer to do it as a round trip.
Thanks!
Heading south, I recall a road crossing just before the ascent...

16 miles is not close to being right.

Oh I guess I was thinking of the Dragon Tooth trailhead, which the article says is right off of 311

you're right there's another 311 access
park in the Dragon's Tooth parking area, take the blue blaze up to Lost Spectacles Gap, hang a right on the AT, go up to Dragon's Tooth (short blue blaze on left as you head south on the AT), reverse directions and hike out - estimated milage around 7 total.
The "Rte. 311 trailhead" is considerably farther from Dragon's Tooth -- without my data book handy, I'm guessing it's 5 or 6 miles from there to Rte. 624.

These trail directions are perfect. Just a few more driving directions:
When you get on 311 northbound (exit 141 off I-81) you'll first pass the McAfee's Knob parking lot within a few miles. It's huge, and directly on top of a mountain. Keep going past this one, and down through the tiny intersection that is Catawba. On your left, 10 miles total from I-81, is a wooden sign that says "Dragon's Tooth" parking lot.

While you are at it, hike North to McAfee's Knob. Another jewel in Catawba. Panoramic view.
Thanks for everyone's advice!
