I need to get from Portland, ME to Gorham, NH on June 23rd.

Any good ideas? Is it possible for me to just get a cab at the airport and take that? (I realize that would be expensive).

Let me know if you have any helpful thoughts.

Brian

It's probably not a rough hitch -- take 95 up to Gray, ME (maybe 10 miles) then Rte. 26 north/west to Bethel and another 20 miles west from there on Rte. 2 to Gorham.

There's Greyhound bus service from Portland to Boston (out of the way, I know, but it's a short ride) and Concord Trailways goes from Boston to Gorham. No idea how much a cab would cost, but bus fare has got to be many times cheaper.

Thanks everybody.

I looked at the bus thing, but after emailing Mary Ann from Hikers Paradise, she advised that I would have to come from Boston, not Portland.

I did find an enterprise car rental in Gorham, so I'm just doing a one-way rental and paying the $75 one-way fee in addition to a $20 daily rental. It sucks, but it will guarantee that I don't blow a whole day on a bus or hitching instead of on the trail.

Thanks

Probably a good choice. Friggy drive, wouldn't want to hitch it...

Going from Portland ME to Gorham NH via Boston would take at least 5 hours. Via the route I described earlier, it's about 90 minutes.

Right, and I said 90 minutes, from memory. You can easily average 55 mph over most of that route, except for a couple of stretches along Rte. 26.

Point is, Boston is completely out of the way.

PS: I looked over the Mapquest route in your link... it includes directions to downtown Portland, which weren't p/o my estimate. (Downtown Portland is well off Rte. 95.) Anyway, OP seems to have it figured out -- if he can get a one-way rental car at a reasonable cost, that's the way to go.

The way I read Brushfire's last post he isn't going to Portland anymore, only Boston.

Brian- are you flying to Boston from Indiana? Have you considered flying to Manchester NH?
