My mom told me once that if I,
" learned to like walking in the woods, you will never be bored."
As most things mom said, she was right.

Mom said nothing which was the best thing that she could have ever done. I giver her alot of credit. At age 21, I quit my job & school, sold my car, packed up my belongings and went hiking on the AT alone. She must of had great faith and courage to say nothing as she dropped her daughter off at SNP.

My Mom would take us when we were young to State Parks to go for day hikes or swimming so I guess she taught me to love the outdoors.

My Mom was a day hiker and introduced me to the Green Mountain Club's New York Section where most of the hikes were in Harriman Park. My Dad was not outdoors-oriented at all.

My Mom's best advice was to be patient on uphills because after a while, you get your second wind and it becomes easier. She was right - I even admitted that as a kid.

My Mom would take us when we were young to State Parks to go for day hikes or swimming so I guess she taught me to love the outdoors.
My Mom was the outdoors person in the family. My Dad was into keeping six kids clothed and fed during the 1930s Depression. My Mom packed us all up into Sears Roebuck tents and took us to the White Mountains and the
Dolly Copp campground for 10-12 weeks each summer.

We weren't exactly poor during the depression. My Dad who had never gone beyond the 10th Grade, had used 1920's affirmative action for World War One veterans to get a job in the Post Office, which kept some income coming in.

Though we lived on the coast in a $2,200 house with a distant view of tidal water, Mom liked the mountains best, so that is where we went each summer.

So what's the best advice she ever gave me? "Come up here, there are some soft rocks up here."

I, and my siblings, have been looking for those "soft rocks" -- and finding them for years. It's kept us together these 80 plus years -- all alive, all healthy, and all looking for those special rocks.

Kinda the opposite story. Somewhere above the treeline on Katahdin I thought to myself - I'm not supposed to be up here, mom wouldn't approve. Then I smiled and kept climbing.

My mom told me that there was a trail that went from somewhere down south all the way to near the Canadian boarder.

my mom is a horticulturist/gardener by profession. gardening is in my blood, i helped her around our house in va beach when i was quite young. she told me always keep an eye out for interesting flora. and i know all the names of the blossoms and trunks thanks to her book she gave me.sadly, the only trail she has ever been out with me on was bushytop at skyland.

thanks mom

Made me learn how to swim. She didin't know how to swim. I ended up doing all the life guard and river rescue stuff because of her. My mother hiked and rode horses when it was not cool for women to do it. She was also a wonderful fisherman, gardner, reader, and great with a gun. My mother was born in 1918 and died in 1999. An absolute model of living life. She is my role model. I hope I have her genes.

3rd party story here. not sure if it's true & not to sure it was good advice, but I heard about a hiker a few years back whose mom made him wear a bicycle helmet to hike the trail. I'm sure that helmet came off as soon as mom could no longer see him in the rear view mirror.

Mom's been dead for 25 years now, but I still keep that in mind when planning my hiking.

My Mom did'nt understand why i went hiking. She wanted to to buy a couch and have a baby.... that would have made her happy. It spooked her that I hiked and she worried and wished for me a more normal life.

My "tough old Irish Broad" mom (her frequent qoute not mine....) told me to go do what would make me happy and not worry about anyone else or what they had to say about it.
I miss her everyday.. she loved to walk in the woods but worked too hard taking care of five kids to get out and do it much.

My Mom is still around at 81. She was a great Girl Scout Leader and loved hiking. She would have loved to hike the trail, but was too busy with 4 daughters. Now she thinks I'm crazy for doing it at my age and tells me I should be home with my husband. But secretly I think she wishes she could...
