How tall are you? I think this is a kid's backpack.

That does look like a small frame. I would definitely try it on first to see how it feels. If you have alittle extra money floating around, and are set on an external frame, check out luxurylite.com. I have that pack and love it.

it's a normal size frame http://www.jansport.com/js_product_detail.php?cid=31&pid=TFA7

From the photo, it looks like a flimsy frame. I'd be concerned about durability for a through-hike.

it's the same standard jansport frame. if it breaks they replace it. it's fine for a thru-hike

I have 2 Jansport externals. The frames are excellent on both of them.

My son used one of these packs up until this year (past three years). He just changed to a Dueter (spelling?). Anyway, this pack served him well and he easily got everything inside (even his sleeping bag and his 1/2 of a tent) for typical three day trips.

I recommend this pack to my newest Boy Scouts with the explaination that it will serve them very well for typical weekend car-campouts and allow them to backpack with the Troop if they want to try backpacking at a very reasonable price (49 at Campmor right now). I also tell parents that $49 is not too much should the boy decide that walking long distances with "stuff" on his back is not his idea of fun.

Having said that, from my son's experience (and my experience with a Jansport Carson), this is not the most comfortable pack. The pack does not have load lifters and the hip belt is not the best. I have come to really enjoy a pack with a better harness system (Gregory and Granitegear internals). If you are dead set on an external frame pack of this type, you should look at Kelty packs, the harness system is much better (in my opinion).

As to durability, my son is pretty hard on his gear and never had a problem with this pack. I also never had a problem with my Jansport Carson. I did use Jansport's customer service one time for a hip belt buckle (wanted a spare, just in case). I sent an email to inquire about purchasing one (they are a little unique) and did not get a response (in email), they just shipped me a buckle (free). Very good customer service in my opinion.
