As of now my hikes have been in the Great Smoky Mountains, for which I have a map. I will do the last section of the GSM in the next couple of weeks or so. Newfound Gap to Davenport Gap. Now my plans go a little farther.

My next section will more than likely be north toward Hot Springs.

Are the ATC Guide Books & Maps what I need? Or are there other souces for maps.

I have The Thru-Hikers Handbook 2008 edition.

Trails illustrated maps are pretty good too.

If you have the maps and latest handbook book thats all you should need, plus a compass of course, just in case.

You don't really need the ATC guide book if you have the thru-hikers handbook, but it won't hurt to bring the ATC Guide Book, if you don't mind carrying the extra weight. I sometimes carry both just because its the only thing I have to read on the trail.
