I plan on hiking the section from wingdale, ny to glencliff, nh beginning on wed. the 25th.
Anyone know where to pick up the AT in Wingdale, NY? What route and exact location/trailhead.

Thanks,

Never been there by car. I do know that the Trail crossing in Wingdale is on Hoyt Rd. Do a Mapquest search for Hoyt Rd. and you'll figure out how to get there.

You can pick up the AT on RT22, just north of Pawling. It is very well marked here and has northbound and southbound pullovers/parking. Hoyt Rd. is a little further north and is on the border of NY/CT. You can get there by taking RT22 North to RT55 EAST and look for Hoyt Rd. on the right.

p.s. RT22 is easily accessible from I-84/I-684.

I do not suggest leaving a car at either place especailly Hoyt Rd. Mine was broken into there last year when only out for an hour.

Ditto what Tin Man said. If you're taking MetroNorth from NYC to Wingdale, there is an official AT station, but I believe weekday trains aren't scheduled to stop there. Unless you can sweet-talk the conductor, your choice is to get off in Pawling and walk 2 miles north on Rte 22 or continue on to Wingdale and walk about the same distance south on 22 to the AT crossing.

Having said that, on the east side of 22 the AT passes through a local forest preserve and I believe there is at least one side trail from Wingdale that would cut the corner and get you onto the AT without the full backtrack down Route 22. But you'd miss some white blazes that way, if it matters to you.

The Rt. 22 trailhead is a short distance from either Pawling or Wingdale. I've had no problems hitching on Rt. 22 whereas 55 might be more difficult.

depending on what day you are looking to start I can give you a lift from the train stop in town to the trail head. Send me a PM if you need this. I maintain from the Train stop to the top of Corbin Hill south of there. I live near by.

He said he plans to start on Wed. the 25th, but didn't say how he was getting there.

I will be getting a lift to wingdale. I was just wondering what would be the easiest spot for my ride to drop me off coming from the east. Sounds like it won't be too hard to find either rt. 22 in pawling or hoyt rd. in wingdale.
We are not leaving the car, just a drop off goodbye and see you in 3 or 4 weeks.

Thanks all for the help. I'll google hoyt rd. and rt. 22 and rt. 55,

Chesterfield's in SW New Hampshire, right? Most likely the easiest will be I-91 to Hartford, then West on I-81. Rte 22, has an exit off I-84 just a few miles south of Wingdale. But if you're coming south on secondaries, Rte 22 is a much faster ride than Rte 7 all the way from the north country down to Wingdale.

That's west on I-84 all the way from I-91 to RT-22. There is no I-81 in CT... a typo, I am sure.

Yep... sorry 'bout that. Glad he hasn't left yet.
