While stopped at the Mountain Crossings outfitter in Neel's Gap in '06 I was interested to see (what I thought were) several large, old black and white photographs depicting CCC workers and CCC projects. I went to the MC website today and sure enough, way off in the the background on the right side of the website pic, you can see one of the old photos (large rectangle on the fireplace, mostly white). http://www.mountaincrossings.com/index.asp?PageAction=CONTACTUS (http://www.mountaincrossings.com/index.asp?PageAction=CONTACTUS)

I called MC and spoke with Winton Porter about my recollection of the photos in the building, which he confirmed. I also recalled that structure, housing the outfitter/hostel was a CCC project. He confirmed this also.

Then Winton told me that there is a new museum in Vogel State Park, GA dedicated to the CCC. Lots of pics, tools, equipment and other memorabilia. Three museum pics at this site...Take a look... http://gastateparks.org/net/content/images.aspx?s=100.0.0.5 (http://gastateparks.org/net/content/images.aspx?s=100.0.0.5)

Special thanks to Winton Porter at Mountain Crossings who was kind enough to e me the attached, historically significant CCC photos to use in this thread.

And while we're on the CCC subject, this from my journal... "On the second day of hiking the (Shenandoah) park, the lady Brits and I met a couple of young guys, Daniel and Avery, who were doing some research on the trail. They were actually identifying significant areas of the trail that were built by the conservation corps, (CCC) back in the 30's and were inventorying those areas. (such as trail walls) They hope to complete the inventory in the park and then make application on the Historic Register to include these locations. It's a college credit project that was very interesting to learn about."

Sadly, at this time I have no idea the outcome of their efforts to have these items included in the Historic Register.

Sorry if this info is redundant. Whiteblaze is so enormous it's difficult to know what's gone on in the past. I did search "CCC" and didn't see any of this info, so I hope it's new and I hope you'll enjoy it.

Thanks, McPick! This has been an interesting thread, and has given some of us a bit more to ponder.
