If I wanted to start hiking the AT in September to knock out a couple 100 miles and get my gear situated, do you think that would be a good idea? How is the temperature in northern Georgia and farther north in September? How many people would I see leaving that late?

How far north are you willing to go?

There is nothing finer than hiking in New England in September, and I'm not just saying that because I live here now.

September's a great month to hike, in general. Nice temperatures, bugs are mostly gone. Some minor issues: streams are low, days getting shorter, occasional cold rain... or maybe a hurricane or "tropical depression."
