Yep, did just that at the end of my 2002 section (Hanover to Bennington.) While you're at it, you can also walk to the Rev. War monument and climb to the top and get the views. The monument is just another few blocks. Plus there's a museum right in that neighborhood with some Grandma Moses paintings.

Sure. Pretty little cemetery. If memory serves, his self-written epitaph was "I had a lover's quarrel with the world" which I always thought was pretty cool.

In any case, Bennington is a great place to visit.

Whose woods these are I think I know
His house is in the village though
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake
The woods are lovely, dark and deep
But I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep
And miles to go before I sleep...

my all time favorite poem...i recite it every time i'm on the trail..i hope to get there someday.....before my mom's stroke we used to share this with each other, she loved Mr. Frost's work......leeki

There was also some line about two paths diverging in a wood.

I always thought this would make a great tee shirt........

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I....
I took the one less traveled by
And that has made all the difference.

my daughter used this quote in her salutatorian address 5 years ago, and my eyes were not dry....leeki

Has anyone ever stopped by Robert Frost's grave and house while near Bennington, VT?
I've loved Frost's poetry for many, many years. When I moved 20 month's ago to a small village very close to Bennington, his grave was one of the first places I visited. Since I do almost all my shopping in Bennington, and the churchyard is on my route, I often stop for a few quiet minutes there. Bennington is a wonderful, historical place.

The last three photos on this page (http://gallery.backcountry.net/at-vt-2002?page=4) are from Bennington. If you can afford it (or share a room, etc.) I can recommend the Paradise Motel, if it's still in operation. It was a great place to hang out while I waited for my wife to pick me up and take me home. Wasn't all that expensive, around $60 or so (in 2002.) It's within easy walking distance of town and all the attractions mentioned so far.

My all time favorite poem too. That poem was my first introduction to real literature. (I'm an English major.) And it has stuck with me ever since.

Paradise Motel? Is the name misleading at all?

How about

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and We...
We took the longer one
And that has made all the difference.

Chance09, Frost (I think) would have loved your line! My wife and I hiked and visited Bennington, what a wonderful place! Very New England.

Paradise Motel? Is the name misleading at all?

Hey, I didn't name the place, just stayed there. :D Actually, I've stayed there on a couple of occasions. Nothing super-special, but it's a perfectly decent little place. It might be a bit upscale for a thru-hiker on a tight budget, though. It was a great way to end a generally HOT, HOT section hike.

LW, is that the Blue Blaze path that leads to "The Place" in Dasmascus? Ok, bad joke, especially on the day George Carlin dies.

Hey, what better way to honor George than off-key jokes? :D

Haaaa True, Terrapin. George might pepper a few of his "7 unspoken" words as well!

Wow. You went to the house, too? Was it a ways away from the grave? I've heard they have tours at the house.

They did have tours but we just checked out the free gallery. The house was just a mile or two from the grave. My parents were both English teachers and they were visiting us in Bennington so it was cool to see it with them.

The graveyard was really amazing to see. Lots of revoluntionary war era graves.

If your interested in finding grave sites of other famous people, try this link (http://www.findagrave.com/). In NH you can find Claude Rains, Ogden Nash, Civil War generals, etc.. I've used this web site and you'd be surprised who you might 'dig up'.;)
