:sun This past Saturday, I took my 11-yo g-son on a day hike, on the “AT” (his first time). We hiked the “AT” up past “guillotine-rock” (Apple Orchard Mtn) to the back of the FAA radar-tower, then reversed direction and hiked to Thunder Hill Shelter. At the shelter he got to meet some Thru-hikers (I forgot their names), saw some deer and a pair of the LARGEST great-horned owls I have seen in my 61-yrs.

Well, he has fallen in love with the experience and wants to go back ASAP. The trip was a pleasure, to have introduced him to something I love and believe in so much. These young people are the future of the “AT”. :D
-------------------------------
Now: He is 11-yo, tall, skinny, very-academic, loves animals, the outdoors, mountains and his name is William (we call him Will).

Need help coming up with a Trail-Name for him :-?

guillotine - but that might be too brutal for a kid.http://hikinghq.net/forum/images/smilies2/dontknow.gif

Reason I thought of guillotine was that whenever someone asks how he got his trailname, he can reply that that was his first hike on the AT.

See you on the trail,

Billy... I want to applaud you for taking the opportunity to spend some real and meaningful time with your grandson! As a youth worker, I can tell you that today's young people suffer from "nature deficit disorder"..... The opportunity you gave to your grandson will make an impact on his life long after you are gone...... As far as a trail name

aren't trail names best acquired during/after some length on the trail? (not as a reward but to provide some circumstantial meaning?)
give him some time and i think a good one will become obvious.

good luck :)

My wife and i have had our trail name since high school, it just has to be perfectly describing, intuitive and if it has something to do with the trail that's a bonus... it's like naming a boat. Dont name him Jenny (or Sue):banana.

Let his trail name be Owl.

You said that he is very academic, by that I assume he's smart. He saw 2 unusually large Great Horned Owls on his first hike. Owl's have a connection to intelligence.

So it all leads to Owl as his name.

...Owl's have a connection to intelligence...
Why is that?

Why is that?

Don't know but haven't you seen the cartoons that always have the owl being the smart one, wearing eyeglasses and stuff like that? Didn't say it was a scientific fact, just that there was a connection.

When I was 11 I would have thought that "Guillotine" would have been an awesome name... "Guillotine Will" sounds great! What was his favorite or least favorite part of the trip, or something funny that happened? Something that sticks out is a great way to get a trail name... Of course, I'm the type that picks up nicknames like dogs pick up ticks... and I don't have a "trail name" yet...

Why is that?

I think it came about from Greek mythology. Athena was or evolved into the goddess of wisdom among other things, and her symbol was the owl. So that was picked up in european literary symbolism & art. A few thousand years later we have owls wearing spectacles and little graduation caps.
