Will be staying at Harrah's for work in a couple weeks and have a day free to explore. Does the Tahoe Rim Trail cross by close to there? A loop hike using that trail would be nice, or I could do an out and back. Thinking 15 miles or so. I will not have a car, but could take any form of public transpo if anything is available. Any suggestions?

Actually, I may be getting a car if I have to. So other suggestions with a car would help too.

Looking out my friend's window I can see the lake now. With any luck I'll be starting counter clockwise in a couple days from Echo Summit (after I get the guidebook). Looking at the map it appears Harrah's is closest to Kingsbury south.

You might also consider getting a ride up Barker Pass Road to the PCT/TRT, on the west side of the Lake, in Idlewild on Route 28 (between Tahoe City and Homewood). From there, you could hike about 15 miles to a pick-up in Tahoe City or perhaps Carnelian Bay. I did an hour along this route and would have loved to cover this section if I had had the time. Here is a picture of the lava tuft (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=23793) about a mile from the road, and another from the tuft (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=23795) looking towards the Lake where I ate lunch. Enjoy!

i think i've decided to head up straight out of town on a side trail to snag east peak and monument peak, and perhaps hop on the TRT for a couple miles. but i've also decided to take a car so I'm up for better more scenic suggestions.
