Has anyone (successfully) hiked the Deep Gap Trail from Tate City, GA to Deep Gap, NC and the AT? I've attempted it twice with no avail due to losing the footpath in a maze of logging roads overgrown with head-high brush.

Maybe I shouldn't be hiking it in summer...

If anyone can answer that, I would bet on Ron Haven. He knows all the approaches to the AT in that area as well as anyone.

I've made the hike from Tate City to Deep Gap,once, and in winter. It's a hard trail to follow. I can't give details..... but it is possible. I used map and compass to stay on track.

Skidsteer told me about the trail, that's about all I can say on the subject.

I've hiked it at least twenty times.

A half dozen times I helped lost people get found. Hell, my wife got lost on that trail once and she was right behind me. :D

There's a half mile of so near the middle that gets tough. The rest is easy enough.

Most folks get lost just past the half mile of Hell when the trail takes an extreme switchback and they keep going straight.

It's pretty well-marked nowadays. In 2003 after the hurricanes there wasn't much trail to follow in places.

Come on, tell the truth. You tried to lose her and then realized she had the keys.

I hate it when that happens.
