I love feeling the stress melt away as I look at nature's beauty.

Yes, as I began hiking a new feeling came over me. I didn't know what it was. It felt sort of good but sort of troubling. Maybe I was having a medical malfunction. I'd felt it before a long long time ago...maybe when I was a teenager. It turned out that I was experiencing low stress. Unfortunately, it's not permanent.

I can't do this in just one sentence! I love the peace, beauty, and lack of stress that I experience in God's world. Society places a lot of expectations on us (which is the source of a lot of stress!) and I like to get away from it all as often as I can.
A few weeks ago, I saw in the news an article about people who wanted some of their limbs amputated. No good reason why they wanted an amputation, they just wanted one. The one guy interviewed wanted his left arm amputated just because he felt as though it didn't belong on his body.
I wonder how many phobias and mental conditions like this one would disappear if these people had to spend a couple of months in the wilderness backpacking and surviving. These people have so much time on their hands that they can obsess about irrational ideas... They wouldn't have time for that on the trail! There would be no time for the anorexic to worry about how much they weigh (though it could be a good thing if you could get them to obsess about how much their packs weigh:-?) Just my 2 cents.

I think I know where you're coming from. February 1989 I broke my femur while skiing in Maine -- surgery, two-week hospital stay, crutches, cane, a few months of rehab just to walk properly again. Later that year when I "decided" to hike the AT, one of my reasons was simply to celebrate the ability to walk again. I still had a bunch of stainless steel hardware in my leg as I did that walk.
