Hello...

I have a thing against crappin' in the woods. On my AT hike in 05, I made it all the way to the state of NY before I had to do it. So I am wondering, do the shelters have ****ters? All of them or almost all of them? I remember the shelters on the AT section of the LT to be some of the best of the whole trail so I am assuming they do... thanks!

Every shelter on the LT has a privy. It's about an even split as to whether each is a composting or mouldering type, so check to see if, technically, you should be peeing in it or not. They are usually signed as to which type they are.

Ouch. Sounds painful. And obviously you're not a gram weenie either. That's gotta be a lot of extra weight.

I'd try more fiber. :D

Must have been a relief to get out of the Smokies :)

If I may ask, when are you planning to hike the LT? After my plans for an AT section fell through this past Spring I've been thinking of a Fall hike in Vt.

My son is spending 5 months there soon as part of his Fellowship field work so it seems to fit.

Thanks for the help folks.

WalkingStick: My pack weighed 18 lbs with 2 days food and water but in the Smokies I had a carrying weight of up to 25 lbs...if you get my drift ;-)

Tom: I will be thru-hiking the LT NOBO August 3-16 2008. Hope to see ya on the trail!

A mouldering privy is a type of composting privy.

How can one make it through GSMNP and the section between Spivey Gap and Damascus without sh1ttin' in the woods?

Turns out that the guy who wrote the book (literally) on composting and mouldering privies, that is used as the bible by the ATC, runs the stewardship program for the GMC. He's also on the stewardship council of the ATC. That's why the crappers on the LT are so fine.

Yep, there's one at every shelter. Some are works of art, most are at least decent places to do one's business. A few are palatial with room to change or wash, or if the shelter itself is under construction, room for two to get out of the rain and cook a hot lunch!

No, I meant Pete Antos-Ketcham. Here's the manual: ATC's Backcountry Sanitation Manual. (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/atf/cf/%7BD25B4747-42A3-4302-8D48-EF35C0B0D9F1%7D/1%20Content%20and%20Introduction.pdf)

Working on an E2E. Spent a night at Sunrise. Take a look at that privy and you'll be happy to Sh1t in the woods. It defines nasty.
