I'm doing a little research. Can you tell me what your favorite activity for 'night life' would be while on the AT.

So we can keep it clean, I'll start you off with #2. Don't bother to list #1, I already have that one. Your help will be most appreciated.

Here's a couple to get you thinking: star gazing, telling stories...

Thanks ahead of time,

I have to say my favorite night time trail activity is sitting around a campfire talking. If there is no one around I read and enjoy being alone.

For me it's sitting by a campfire and smoking my tobacco pipe. That's about as close as I get to meditation, reflection, and true relaxation.

Drinking good bourbon is fun too, but that puts me in an entirely different mood.

I gotta agree with Sly on this one. After putting in a solid day of hiking my nightlife consists mainly of giving my body a rest so that I can jump back out there the next day. Guess that's might be my age talking though :D

Can't speak to the entirety of the trail, but in PA at least: there are hundreds of established campsites, both near and far from shelters, where you can tent, enjoy a fire, make noise....all without bothering the shelter dwellers. If you want to do what you want to do....there are options.

Sitting around a campfire is great, but that doesn't happen very often, on the AT at least. Most of the time I'm ready to sleep by nightfall, but on a clear night I'll spend some time looking up at the stars.

As for #1: I hiked with my eventual wife for 110 miles from Duncannon to Harpers Ferry after college. We were both so filthy and tired at the end of the day that we never really got very amorous.

Sometimes I like finding satellites or the space shuttle in the night sky. I find it both fascinating and disconcerting. It's fascinating that we have developed such technology, and it can be seen in a dark night sky. It's disconcerting, because it is in many regards, space litter. Even though some of it can impact our quality of life favorably.

Tom Thwaites (father of PA's Mid State Trail hence grand-father of the GET) tells a story about leading the Penn State Outing Club kids out to the Quehanna Wild Area and after summarizing some of this info: http://www.dep.state.pa.us/brp/Quehanna/history.htm he retreated to his tent and snickered to himself as the foxfire became visible around the margins of the dying campfire. :D

Probably way more info than anyone needs, but you did ask. I have many audio books on my I-Pod also, but really miss seeing the words. I have been thinking about a Kindle (?) but not sure about how it charges. I also just like to listen to the woods, depending on where and with whom I am with.

Oh absolutely, I love the sound of water nearby, as well as a sip and great conversation by the campire before bed. As I sleep, the water moving over rocks sounds like the laughter of small children to me, makes me smile should I wake. Ahh, the best rest there is.

I would love to lay in my hammock and zone out to the sound of a local channel coming through ear buds on my smart phone, but my hiking partner threatens to toss the phone in said stream if I dare bring it along.

So what?

And none of em -- not a single one of em -- are permitted to carry illegal drugs into The Place. Because the church owns it and they get to make the rules. And that ain't gonna change no matter how much you whine about it.

Because I lack the myopic viewpoint that all people who use marijauna are dopers, I too am a doper. If I'm gonna get crap from the LW flunkie batallion for standing up and 1) resisting being laballed by some ignorant know it all, and 2) for pointing out that there are many so called "dopers" with IQs that far exceed that of most posting here, then so be it. I think you missed his point in relation to Lone Wolf's comments regarding dopers.

The list does loose a little credibility when you have to list Kurt Cobain twice...;)

Why all the harsh talk on "dopers"? I maintain a professional job, plus run a small business, have a family, built and own my home with no morgage, have a wonderful family, lots of interests and hobbies, pay my taxes, grow a good portion of my own food and yet still enjoy a daily dose... Should I be judged negitively for it?

I'm not reading into anything that's been said as negative judgment of any one individual. The point was just made that at THIS POINT IN TIME marijuana is illegal, end of story. Now, that may change in the future, and when it does congrats to those who wish to partake. But, until then they are breaking the law (where it is illegal) and like it or not that makes them criminals. Now I would be curious to see by what circular logic anyone can dispute that?

Again, I wasn't debating the legality. I was standing up and correcting LW for calling me a doper when in fact I am not. I was also pointing out that for someone who is also labeling many people as "entitled," he seems to go around feeling as if he is entitled to label people with no basis in fact. Then finally I was pointing out that marijuana usage has no known correlation with intelligence quotient. It may have been demonstrated to have effects on short term memory, but not intellgience. I am only trying to keep things straight.

As to the legality of it...well, that's not what I was arguing. If someone calls me something I am not, I will correct them.

If you want circular logic, I am sure you find plenty in your own life's history explaining why you were right in whatever instance(s) you chose to break a law/rule/regulation. It's a truly rare person who has lived their lives without breaking a single law...and if that person is you, then hold on, lemme go get my gold star sticker pad for you too.

Don't worry too much about it, catfish. "Yer a doperrrrrrrrr!" is the last refuge of someone who's been confronted with logic, reason and easily researched fact. The name is essentially meaningless.

I don't deny my mistakes, nor do I attempt to justify them, I just accept that they were a poor choice on my part and move on. Where is the circular logic in that? Just because I think smoking pot is a useless venture and a waste of time and energy, I do not think any less of someone for choosing to do so at a moral level (legality not withstanding). That would be rather hypocritical of me since 2 or 3 nights a week I enjoy a cold Guinness with my dinner. Many would tell me that was a waste of time and money, and they would have a right to their opinion.

It's not important that anyone agree with me, I'm quite comfortable with who I am and where I stand. :sun

You are the one who brought it back to the issue of it's legality, as if that ended the discussion, when I wasn't arguing the legality of it. I was arguing against the McCarthyism like tactics by Lone Wolf and his entourage. It's one thing to express your opinion in a debate, it's a whole other thing to try to end the conversation by calling someone a "doper" and use that label to discredit the other person's point of view.

BUT with that said, I am glad to read your expanded version of what you meant. I've no problem with what you personally are saying here.

I surely understand that the word "doper" is meaningless. It's like ******, ******, commie, redneck, or any other stereotype. It mostly supplies information about the type of person using the stereotype and not the group being stereotyped.

So, if we close threads that devolve into this sort of back and forth, you all will just Zombie up old threads to continue acting less than mature?
Please, grow up and move on.

The list does loose a little credibility when you have to list Kurt Cobain twice...;)

Thats because he smoked twice as much as the others.

Didn't he get a gun and blow his brains out?

Not much of a role model.

Just having a little fun boss, If you were gonna close the thread it probably should have been a couple pages ago.

I believe his death and whether it was homicide or suicide remains a hotly debated topic with no real proof on either side that ends the discussion.

and I believe his issue was with heroin and opiates, not with pot. Just so we keep talking about reality and not la la make up whatever you wanna say to feel right land.

He also dealt with depression and a chronic stomach condition that caused severe pain which probably lead to his self medicating.

He had a lot on his plate- all easily googled.

I think you missed his point in relation to Lone Wolf's comments regarding dopers.

You listed your family twice. :D

Hey having short term memory loss isn't always a bad thing.

Like when you get a speeding ticket on the way home from work. You arrive home and your GF asks, how was your day? You reply, Uneventful...

You ain't lying if you don't remember!

Also, on long grueling days, the miles just peel away when you loose track of how far you've gone or how far you’re going!

It's all a matter of perspective... You say short term memory loss, while I say brief reprieve from reality!

Wait.. What are we talking about?:D

Yes, it does. In most cases a misdemeanor. What's the big deal with being a criminal anyway? Henry David Thorou was a criminal. Heck, these days, almost 1/3 of the population are under the finger of the criminal justice system.

If you were a POW in the Gulf War, and owed child support you couldn't mail because you were being held against your will, you're a Criminal according to the Bradley Amendment.

We even have debtors prisons again. You can go to jail for not paying a hospital bill.

Indentured servitude? Still exists. Most courts require probationers to hold jobs, even if they can cover their nut without doing so.

The word "Criminal" just doesn't have the bite it used to have, not with the laws we have today.

Of course nobody should be smoking the stuff on the Church property, those are the idiots that should be drawing ire.

How come every forum gets back to pot there is so much more to life than pot! Maybe you should start new forum pot-smokers verses non-pot smokers

There shouldn't be a "versus" to begin with.

I'd rather people just let people be. There's no reason why every time some idiot smokes pot somewhere he shouldn't, it gets taken out on people who had nothing to do with it, rather than the idiot.

I'm not a pot smoker, just for the record.

Like Bill Clinton I never inhale also, but it seems that the anti-pot and pot supporters run amuck in different forums where they should have their own, to discuss the issue to whatever point they feel like

When the opportunity presents itself and I have a solitary night I just get all into that delicious feeling of loneliness and solitude and separateness. Never lonely, mostly. Just alone. That's the ticket fer me...

Until an alarmingly unidentifiable noise is heard outside my tent and I spend the rest of the night in a petrified cold sweat.
