Sorry for my ignorance but I have seen reference to postholing in several threads. I think it is a technique used for hiking in snow but I'm not sure. Someone please explain.

When I refer to post holing. I am talking about walking in the snow and my legs sinking up to my thighs in snow.

It's hiking without snowshoes when snowshoes are desirable.

Postholing is when you hike without snowshoes or XC skies. You creat a hole in the snow from yor foot. It is very dangerouse for XC skiers because those postholes creat bumps, especialy when the snow gets hard. This can cause injury to a skier. In the ADK's there is a law that requires one to use snowshoes or skies when the snow is 6 inches or more. If you are caught postholing you can be given a ticket. Please use snowshoes or at least walk to the sides. This is more for areas that have snow on ground all winter. There is nothing worst than someone postholing on ski tracks. Sorry for the lecture. You have to be a XC skier to understand.
