Another commercial hiking enterprise hits the info superhighway.

I'll extrapolate the cost of this new service with the 'non-commercial' 2010 AT Circle Expedition.

$130 minimum per day X 127 Days = $16,510 as opposed to a suggested donation of $1,000.

With the ATA you get a chance to walk a small section of the AT in VT for $130 a day, but with the Circle Expedition one has the opportunity to walk the entire trail for a little less than a $8 donation per day.

I make this post to clear up the 'misconception' out there that any 'guided group' on the AT must be a commercial venture. This is just not the case.

Warren, can you still do this for $1,000 with the price of gas and insurance what it is today?

First of all, I sure like this new 'kinder and gentler' WhiteBlaze where I can post and people respond with curious questions rather than mean-spirited name-calling.

The suggested donation of $1,000 may vary somewhat based on how many people we have going on the 2010 Expedition. This number will not be known until after the last practice hike in early April 2010. The donation is to cover gas/oil/car registration/car insurance/miscellaneous group supplies (i.e. a roll of garbage can liners) and a few campground fees.
I do not believe in liability insurance. This is a 'folk' endeavor.

Obviously, if we have more people using the van, the less the cost per person will be.
Dividing $5 per gallon of gas among 15 people is different then dividing it among 7 people.

I appreciate your constructive question. A positive change.

The $130 dollars a day is an average price for most mid-luxury hotels these days. You'll pay that or more to stay in a hotel in the mountains or ocean view hotel. You're not paying to hike, you're paying to stay in their nice hotel, and it does look nice. After buying breakfast and lunch, you'll pay that or more to stay in a luxury hotel in Gatlinburg.

It's more like an ad for a vacation package at a nice resort that has guided day hikes available. Probably a nice place, though.

Is his service a registered non-profit? I am not making trouble here or picking on Warren. I know many don't care for or agree with all of our system of laws, but that is just the way it is when it comes down to it. And I am just asking a simple question.

PM warren and ask him

Curious on WB rule #5 banning commercial posting. Did WB automated bot violate the rule with the OP? Is Warren's posting about his service a violation?

Just interested since we have all these rules to abide.

Thank you. :)The RSS feed pulls articles off the web that have Appalachian Trail in the text. If there hadn't been any posts attatched to this thread I probably would have deleted it. Any specific question or complaint about the TOS should be submitted to the Admin via PM. This forum is for review and discussion of RSS News Articles. Thanks

Mr. Doyle is not advertising his ventures here, he is simply making a comparison of the costs of different types of hikes/expeditions.

So let me understand. All questions not very specific to what is posted by the OP need to be handled by PM. Sounds like some folks are going to get a lot of PMs rather than hearing the answer once. :-?

Okey doke. Thanks for clarifying.Well, generally you find a thread, read the OP then comment/ discuss that topic. I am only asking you to direct specific TOS questions or complaints to the proper place. As far as Warren's Expedition goes, there are probably some threads out there somewhere with the info you want or where you could continue your discussion. I'm just trying to keep this particular thread on topic.

The circle expeditions are a labor of love.
Does an individual who helps people have to be a registered non-profit?
I am an individual not an organization.
Henceforth, I am not registered as a non-profit.
I don't believe in 'liability protection' or asking for grants.
The circle expeditions are not 'institutionalized'. They are simply folk.

I cannot say anything more here or PM (unless someone wants to give me 1,000 PM count). I have deleted previous messages and questions for being off topic and will need to delete this one too, shortly.

To the OP, oops RSS Feed, good luck with your new commercial venture. ;)
