How long will the Post Office hold a package for you when you have it sent there in your name? Is there a standard number of days, or is it up to each Post Office management to decide?

"General Delivery is a great choice for you if carrier service or a PO Box is not an option. Your mail will be held at your Main Post Office for up to 30 days and can be conveniently picked up at any retail window. This is also a great option if you don’t have a permanent address. To find your Main Post Office, please contact your local Postmaster."

They are supposed to hold it for up to 30 days according to the manual, but there are occaisional "rogue" employees that don't follow the rules. This would be extremely rare in a trail town. It's a good idea to put "Hold for AT Hiker" on the package. If you won't be picking it up withing 30 days, call the Postmaster and let them know. Most PO's try to be very cooperative with hiker packages. Mrs. Buzzard used to work in Norwich, VT PO and they always would try to do whatever they could to help hikers.

Although the USPS Manual says "30 days" it is up to the Local Postmaster to deviate. I have seen them hold them much longer and go to great effort to deliver the packages. I have seen one sent back after ten days "because we do not have the storage space." Remmeber that the USPS does not care about or recognise Trail names. It must be addressed to your real (matches official ID) name.
