:sunHey everyone,

Wanted to let you know that in honor of 60 years of thruhiking the AT, the Earl Shaffer Foundation has issued a really neat postage stamp and event cover.

The stamp bears the image of young Earl at the sign atop Katahdin. The event cover describes the anniversary and has a picture of that fabulous photo of boots that Earl so loved. The Foundation has made arrangements to have the stamp canceled at the Millinocket, ME, post office on August 5, 2008 -- exactly 60 years from the date that Earl finished that first long cruise! There’s also a bonus: a replica of the note that Earl sent to the ATC back in ‘48, announcing -- in poem-form -- that he was attempting an all-in-one hike of the AT.

This advance sale of the event cover will only be available until July 25th, so folks’ll have to hurry to get one. You can visit the official Earl Shaffer Foundation website to learn more:

(BTW, all proceeds from sales of anything that the ESF sells go to charities and causes near and dear to Earl's heart -- like the ATC, AT Museum Society, ALDHA, and conservation groups and organizations that promote hiking and outdoors to youth, etc.)

He started his hike the month I was born.
And the month I turned 19, a lonely teenager living in a single $6 a week room in Chicago. Life has been fascinating. I wouldn't have missed it for anything.
