Something I've often wondered:
When looking at the guidebooks they give the distance between shelters, but that's not true distance, it's only AT distance, does not include distance of the approach trail to the shelter. So when you read an elevation of a given shelter, such as "Whitley Gap Shelter (3370')"; (Ref: Thru-hiker's Handook-2006 & Thru-hiker's Companion-2005). Is that the elevation at the junction between the AT and the Whitley Gap Shelter approach trail or the shelter's altitude?

The Marine was merely citing an excellent example of topographic extremes. It's helpful to preplan the route between summits
