I have several digital camera questions. Maybe I can get some help...

Nikon Coolpix. It sat untouched for 2-3 months with fully charged NiMH 2000 mAh batteries, brand Digital Concepts. Checked before I went out, drained. Slammed some coppertops in... Is this normal? Now this was a gift so be gentle, if they are junk, I'll replace them.

I understand the concept that I need to get jpegs onto the web to upload them to WB. Any suggestions for a simple (Jethro here) free site?

With the software that comes with the camera- If I sharpen, or mess with color, or zoom, will it look fake or screwy if I go to print? (at store)

I wear bifocals, hike in single vision. Tough lining stuff up in a view screen. I tried to just let the camera do it's work. Any suggestions, other than switching glasses?

Thanks.

Nicads lose about 1% or so of their charge per day, I'm guessing NiMH batteries are similar. That means yes, they'll be dead in three months. If you want long storage/shelf life, go with lithiums (they also work better in the cold than anything else).

You can upload them directly to the WB gallery from your computer or even your camera if it's connected to your computer. Go to photos at the top left of the WB window and select upload photo. In the "upload from your computer" section, select Browse, and navigate through your local folders to the photo. Fill out the other fields on the page like description and such then click submit.

If you'd like to put them elsewhere, search google for "free image hosting" and you will find many easy options that mostly follow the same procedure for uploading as the WB gallery.

I'll second the lithium battery suggestion, more expensive but longer lived and good cold weather service.
As far as uploading pics to WB gallery, mister krabs gave good instructions to that, but I have to downsize my pics (8 megapixel) in order for them to upload using dial-up, otherwise it takes to long and get "timed out".

With the software that comes with the camera- If I sharpen, or mess with color, or zoom, will it look fake or screwy if I go to print? (at store)You can try these features and can return to the original image if you don't like the results, in most cases. i think you have to "save" and "replace" the original image (edit button?)that has been altered.
I often find that the adjust color feature makes the image look better than the original, usually brighter. Some times it makes little difference depending on the conditions when you took the image, mid day bright sunshine images always seem to be troublesome, too much light.

Thanks for the help.

Put some shots into the gallery. Lots of fun with the provided software zooming in, and moving around. People, rock formations, etc. I put them in "small size." Guessed that would be best.

Am I correct that to place them in a thread, the photos must be in a web hosted spot?

Still looking for tips on the glasses thing.

Here's one of your photos above:

Am I correct that to place them in a thread, the photos must be in a web hosted spot? No, you're good to go with them right here.
You can now include them in posts here by a couple different methods and in some forums have them open up in posts. Ask someone else about that option.
Pull up the picture on the screen
at the bottom is the http or URL
Highlight the Http :// and stop as shown above, don't need to go the whole length
Hit Ctrl C, this saves it
Go to your post
Find the icon above with the globe and sunglasses under it?
click on that
Hit Ctrl V
that should bring up the Http address for the image highlighted, ready to click on for viewing.
If you want to use it in word format
example: I hiked Kathadin (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=26330) this week
Highlight Kathadin, click on the globe icon, insert Http address ....hit Ctrl V
Good looking photos BTW
800X 600 is fairly standard and is what larger WB gallery images opens up at. If they are submitted larger than that, you can click on it a second time to view submitted size.
You're IN!

I'd just use the LCD if your out for shorter periods and don't need to worry about battery life (I'm assuming that you had been shooting through the viewfinder before)

V I figure Woodsy is on a Windows platform. This is what I get with Ctrl C and Ctrl V

The above is cut and past some how, pretty convoluted for me on this Mac. I do appreciate being pointed toward the proper place!

Those are sunglasses?

This thing has two side buttons and a ball on top. None of which combine to give me a right click. Enough to drive a man to drink, and I have a chauffeur.

Will they let me in with Nikon software? I know they have a set-up for Kodak Easyshare.

I'll try later!

you can usually use a regular pc style mouse on macs and they will right click (the same as ctrl click for those of us on good computers :D)

You can usually find help websites that will list a lot of the more common shortcut keys used on mac (I might have an address laying around if you're interested)

I just Googled that, and it does appear that this thing does more than I can absorb. I just need to borrow a 15yr old.

You guys enjoy. I deserve it. Like driving a car without knowing how to adjust the mirrors.

It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out how to work the electric mirrors my truck, and I'm an engineer

Sure makes learning to do things like you're trying to do alot easier.
I'll admit to needing alot of help during my learning curve with photos here.
And still tying to figure some of it out.
We are trying to help you as best as the written word permits though.

Easier.

Might understand later, but it is easier.

Keep your pics on your memory card, not stored in the camera!
put the batteries in a small zip lock bag until needed.
this takes time, but helps on the long hike.

For your amusement.

So there I was,

tried to clean up some of the multiple files, folders, and collections from my photographic first step. YeeHaw!

Figured out how to delete stuff, got on a roll and wiped the pictures on the hard drive. Fine job. Looked funny when I opened a collection and got question marks.

Still in camera for just that reason. What a maroon.
