I'm looking for options on getting to the trailheads around Port Clinton PA for a section hike in August. I've checked with Ye Old Backpacker and just want to check other options before I go ahead with their service. Are there other ways to get to Rt. 309 or Swatara Gap if I park my car in Port Clinton? Thanks - Doc, the Singer '98

Check out ATC's Getting to the Trail (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/site/c.jkLXJ8MQKtH/b.806835/) where you can find its A.T. Shuttle List and other helpful information. You may already be aware of this valuable resource given the amount of miles you have accumulated. If so, maybe someone else will learn something new today or bookmark a link for later use.

When you arrive at Port Clinton, you might inquire at Ye Olde Backpacker about what water sources you can rely upon. Remember, BMECC's resident caretakers at PA 501 and Eckville are available to assist you with information about trail conditions and they should be able to answer most questions you may have about the A.T. in Berks County.

I suggest you obtain and carry with you a copy of KTA's map(s) for the section(s) you intend to hike and please take the time to read the regulatory signs posted especially at trailheads. Some of laws and regs in Pennsylvania may be other than what hikers unfamiliar with this area may expect.

Contact information for BMECC is available at www.bmecc.org (http://www.bmecc.org).

Happy hiking.

I am starting a sobo section hike just north of Port Clinton in about 10 days and had a very difficult time figuring out transportation issues. I was going to drive my car to Harper's Ferry and then make my way to Port Clinton, but I decided to leave my car at home. The Trailways bus that used to stop at the Peanut Shop in Port Clinton terminated that route as of July 7th. You can get public transportation to/from from Cabela's in Hamburg Monday through Saturday to Reading, where there are more bus options available. Greyhound does not stop in Port Clinton either. I was fortunate to find a friend willing to drop me off at the trailhead. I used Scott (Ye Old Backpacker) in May to shuttle me and he has a wealth of information about the trails and conditions. Good luck!

A.T. hikers seeking public transportation to Port Clinton trailheads should consider Bieber Tourways (http://www.biebertours.com). They have for many years provided economical service from New York City to Reading.

BARTA (http://www.bartabus.com/) serves both Hamburg and Cabela's with busses departing hourly from Reading weekdays and Saturdays. Click on the BARTA link provided and see Route 20 for more details.
