Does anyone know of a set of plans for a custom pack cover. I want it to fit better then the off the shelf ones, they all seem to have a lot of extra material and fit poor at best. I have tryed three diferant ones. I have already got 3 yards of Sil-nylon, dut I can't decide the best way to go.

You could give up on the pack cover entirely and use a heavy-duty (contractor grade) trash bag as a pack liner instead. Unless you're really set on a sewing project.

If I was doing it, to make it a more custom fit, I'd put my loaded pack on someone else and use a sheet or cut open flat plastic bag to make a template while they were wearing it. Get it all pinned up, cut off the excess and then use that to mark your nylon.

Consider adding some sort of quick-release cordage connecting the sides to each other and the top to the bottom. I modified my off-the-shelf rain cover with lightweight mini-biners, which keeps the cover on my pack in the wind and minimizes the effort required to get into my pack when I stop. Surprisingly, I don't feel the crossed cords between my back and the framesheet.

FWIW, I've tried the pack liner approach and found it lacking. My gear was dry, but my pack was soaked through and I poured out a half-cup of water that had pooled on the bottom; and this was only from an hour of heavy downpour.

I have seen directions for building your own, but don't recall where.

This kind of thing may or may not help.http://www.backpackgeartest.org/reviews/Do%20It%20Yourself/Plans%20and%20Patterns/Quest%20Outfitters%20Backpack%20Cover%20Pattern/Owner%20Review%20by%20Rebecca%20Stacy/

I thought it might have been thru hiker.com but I didn't see it now.
