Will a 30 degree bag be sufficient? or should I being my 15 degree?
What do the temps get like there at night?

I have my 100% Deet ready to go, anything else special I should know.

Thanks :)

It shouldn't get below 40. I think I had a 30 degree bag up there in September.

A thirty degree bag will be fine for August; just make sure you also have a good shelter (tent, tarp, etc.); also, make sure you bring enough clothes so you'll always have something warm and dry to change into at day's end.

Really encourage you to tent. Some great ponds to linger nearby and a great time to enjoy the Maine wilderness. Don't waste it at shelter areas.

30 will be fine. I suggest tenting at East Chairback Pond, great tenting spot I missed out on this year due to timing.

I would think a 40 degree bag would be OK. Also most times when i have been there in August bug juice was unnecessary. But i would still bring it. Also the swimming is great.

good luck

I hiked all of Maine from mid-August to mid-September in '05 and had no problems with my 40 degree bag - maybe one night when I wore my fleece inside. Re bugs, I didn't have any. A Mainer told me they were gone by mid-August; that was the most pleasant surprise of the hike. But since you're leaving Aug. 9 in the 100 mile wilderness, you probably should bring your deet. On the other hand if you take others' advice and tent, I'd shed the Deet.

You can get away with a 40, just have some extra warm clothing for those rare, but existent, cold nights.

Thanks for the advice. I am actually tagging along on someone else's hike but I will write down your suggestions and see how they mesh with the plans

I have had a forty degree bag there in September. I think you'll be fine in August, but you should bring some sort of medium weight pullover for cool evenings and to wear in the bag if it does turn off cold.

And it is true, there should be no black flies, and not very many mosquitoes, by the middle of August.

So if I were to decide to hike south after going north to complete the state of Maine would you change any options since it would now be getting into September?

If your worried about it, carry a 30 with some warm clothing. You'll survive the coldest night you'll see. Maine is nice that time of year.

And if you brought Deet for the first part, you can definitely jettison it for the second.

Thanks guys.
Just thought I would throw out the question in case things were to work out that way.
