Please give me any TIPS (shortcuts) you might have that would benefit new hikers on the AT. They could be as simple as a special way you fold your maps OR how you carry bulky items OR a TIP about setting up camp quickly. Please provide TIPS that are within 50 words long. I'm going to use your TIPS in our podcast ATHiking....the podcast. We'll give you credit instead of a big check :-?. You can also email your TIPS to [email protected] (http://[email protected])

Thanks,

Photo copy your data sheets and place them in a plastic bag instead if taking the whole book.

Cut up and old Walmart blue sleeping mattress into a 2 foot by 2 foot pad to set on at the Shelter or campsite. Beats sitting on just a log.

Carrying a tent? Break it up when you pack. My poles go down the side of my pack, rain fly in small compression sack, tent body in another small compression sack. This uses space more efficiently than keeping it together. As a general rule, I compartmentalize all my gear into small bags and sacks.

That helps. I'd still like to get some new input.

Thanks,

Using lithium batteries rather than alkaline in anything that requires batteries is lighter and lasts longer. Also, lithium is less prone to freezing up in the cold - say when using a camera.

I'm going to withdraw this request. The answer is on the main page, left column "Tips & Tricks". Plenty of good info for future podcasts. Thanks to all who replied.
