good ending.... I went out on a day hike last year not prepared to stay overnight. I got to my car 30 minutes or so after dark, no flashlight. I will aways be prepared to spend the night on day hikes.

We have been lost every once in a while and if you end up in the woods at dark it is hard to Navigate. Glad it worked out.

I am glad the guy is safe, but how does someone get lost for 24 hours at Hog Pen Gap area? You cross a road walking 4 hours or less in any direction.

I was thinking the same thing. Seems the guy had some vision problems and there was no moonlight to go by. It's 13 plus miles between Hogpen and Unicoi Gaps. There is no telling how far he was in when the sun went down. The trail is a bit overgrown up there with blackberry in some places.
Just a reminder to be prepared for an overnighter even if you don't plan on one.

It worked out ok though. That's always a good thing.

if you are sick or disoriented you can get lost in a mall parking lot

Now getting lost in a mall parking lot or even in the mall itself is something I can relate to. Of course, in that case carrying enough for a safe overnighter would seem a little extreme, but I think I'm going to add it to my golden rules for day hikes and slacking.--Kinnickinic
