i don't think so, i hiked with a canuck for some time in '03. he took his sweet ass time for his hike and i don't think he had a visa (at least i don't ever remember him mentioning having to get one.)
I have not read this article (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21654) in some time, but I believe it may answer your question. If not, you may find it useful in other ways.
Neither the US Immigration Service nor the Department of Homeland
security has set precise limits for staying in the US, as long as the
visitor is a tourist or on business. However, visa holders (not
necessary for a tourist) should show that their passports are valid
for six months beyond their initial period of stay in the US.
Looks like you'll be fine and not have any length-of-stay issues.
Also, visas are not required and usually not issued to "normal" Canadian citizens who are in the US.

One of my best friends is originally from Quebec, and resides now in VA, and she has been asked to show her passport when re-entering the US.
Since you are not looking to take up any residence or employment. You don't need a visa.
Click U.S. Department of State visa link (http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1260.html) to read a page that addresses your question and may provide other helpful information.
Thanks for the info.I hope to start next March.
