Karl Meltzer is behind schedule, but he is not worried about it.

That is the word Tuesday evening from Gorham, N.H., where the Speedgoat was reportedly digging the chicken, black bean and rice burritos whipped up by new crew member Tommy Chandler after Meltzer pulled in following a 31 mile day.

"It was a really challenging route," reported crew member Marit Fischer, who is rotating out, replaced by Chandler for the next month or so of Meltzer's effort to set a new record for a supported through hike of the Appalachian Trail.

Despite being behind his projected schedule, Meltzer is sticking to his plan of spending each night at a road crossing with his support crew.

"The goal is to sleep in the RV every night. Sleeping on the trail would be a worst case scenario," Fischer said.

One change in Meltzer's approach will kick in when he hits the trail Wednesday morning. For the first time since he started his quest. he will be hiking alone. Matt Hart, Meltzer's ultra running buddy who hiked all of Maine with him, has left the trail.

Meltzer is expected to do a short day -- around 25 miles -- Wednesday, positioning himself to start early Thursday morning to attack Mt. Washington.

"He is still fully confident he can make up tons of time when the trail gets easier," said Fischer.

Aside from an early blister, Meltzer has had no injuries. His shoe sponsor, La Sportiva, is shipping out a foot maintenance care package to help keep it that way. Fischer said La Sportiva is sending Meltzer new shoes and socks and a box full of foot care products

I love the part that says sleeping on the Trail is a worst case scenario. Couldn't help but laugh at that.

Sleeping on the trail is a worst case scenario?
Making it to the RV at the end of every day is an important goal?
Attacking Mt. Washington?
Appalachian Assault?
What happens when there isn't anything to attack or assault anymore?
Like the Shenandoah National Park.

I'm still at 20%.

If it is not in quotes and attributed, then they are my words, not those of others.

Just want to make that clear so as to not add any fuel to the fire.

Remember, each person has his or her own way of doing things, his or her own path to follow, his or her own goals. For what Karl is attempting right now: to travel the entire length of the AT as fast as possible, yes, there will be times when sleeping on the trail is his best option and his first choice. However, it will be rare. Most nights, he will attempt to find a suitable stopping point where he can meet up with his crew and rest in the RV. The reality is that he needs to recover as much as possible in his down time.

Karl and his entire team are supportive of each person's passion and of each person's personal approach to nature and the outdoors. We just want to encourage everyone to get out there and enjoy this world.

And one clarification: Tommy Chandler will be with Karl through Saturday, when he will be replaced by another Backcountry.com employee. Karl's wife, Cheryl, will also replace Senior at that time.

Thanks for following along.

There would probably be more tolerance and less arm chairing if we had more insights into what Karl was thinking and planning. Some blogs do that well, others just invite more arm chairing. Just saying.

you and matt did an outstanding job out there. you guys got baptized by fire for sure and handled yourselves like the pros that you are. for every 1 person that is critical of the approach, there are 1000 that are supportive and believing. looking forward to meeting later in the trip....billy
