I will be hiking from Mt. Katahdin south through Maine and New Hampshire on the AT, leaving September 4th. I'm using a Speer hammock and wonder if I should leave my bug net home. Any one have experience hiking in Maine and NH in the Fall who can give me some advice?

New England in the fall is about as variable as it gets for bugs. Black flies won't be a problem, but mosquitoes certainly could. The good news is they are practically inactive in temperatures below 40 degrees, which you will encounter many days in the fall in New England. Leaving your bug net behind shouldn't be a problem, but you should probably bring some insect repellant.

Some people get bit so much they get dehyderated. Maine's bugs don't stop until under 58 degrees.
