I seem to remember someone saying that the set of maps for the AT go on sale at some point. I think it was in the fall? Can someone tell me when and where to purchase them? Thanks.
At the ATC store, sometime before Christmas. Keep on checking

It has happened every fall, between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
It's a marketing gimmick -- a way of enticing thru-hiking dreamers to become active susporters of the trail -- not just users of the trail.
Regardless of the gimmick. The goal is important. Only by supporting trail use, can ATC ensure continuing support for the trail.

If you can afford it you should buy the section guides with the maps. Not for use on a thru, but you can learn a lot of the area's history before the hike and relive the hike in meticulous detail afterwards. Lots of fun reading.
