View Full Version : What's for lunch?

Hey everyone -

I've been carrying and eating packaged meat (tuna, chicken, etc.) on a tortilla or pita and eating that for lunches on the trail (along with a side of trail mix, or whatever - but the packaged meat is the main food).

Well - I am absolutely looking for alternatives! I don't want to pull out the stove and cook since it's lunch, but I would like to try something new. I brought peanut butter and bagels last time - and that was a nice break from years of the "tuna snack".

Anyone have some good suggestions for lunch without having to bust out the stove?

salami and cheeses. They usually last a good amount of time. In fact my French wife prefers when the brie sits out for a few days.

For a heavier load, chese and peperoni tortillas

lighter and calorie loaded PB on anything. crackers, bagels, rasin bread, regular bread, snickers, granola bars, etc (have tried all).

Peperroni & whole wheat tortillias. Plenty of carbs (complex carbs for slow burn energy) salt (loss from sweat), Fat (energy), Protein. I also carry some dried cranberrys & raisins and almonds.

Dare I say - but I also enjoyed the individual Spam slices in the foil packets. I also liked pepperoni, jerky, hard salami. And a good hard cheese to go with it.

Bagels get stale too quickly for me. Flour tortillas last a good week or more in my pack.

Nutella on a tortilla.Nutella, good stuff. I first had that when I lived in France as a kid (1980). We were upset to come home without a way to get it. Easy to find now.:sun

Potted meat ... yummmmmmmmmmmm

It's GOOD stuff.

I take at least three cans with me on every trip.

It's got a lot of fat in it as well, so it's very calorie dense compared to some other meat products.

Pepperoni sticks and cheese blocks with tortilla. Marje is from El Salvador and we bring Maseca with is which is corn flour, real light weight and you can make 2 or 3 thick tortillas at night when you have the stove going or fire (fire works better) and just leave them for the next day. At night we stuff the pepperoni and chz into the tortilla and grill that over the fire oh it's to die for.

Aw, heck yeah! Carry a tomato out of town and you've got a BLT. (but no L). Add those new cold tea bags to a nalgene in the morning and by gum, you've got a shure 'nuff Southern lunch.

I think he's talking about the tea bags that are specifically labelled for ice tea? Although you can do what he describes with any tea bag, and you'll have tea by lunch time (if not before).

I saw those cold- brew tea bags at the store, yesterday. I had not heard of them and couldn't dawdle to read the label. Now that y'all mention it, I must check those out. Here's a link (http://www.liptont.com/our_products/black_tea/blk_cold_brew.asp).

I alway have cheese and crackers at "lunchtime." I never get tired of them. Probably because it's not something sweet.

I'll mix Nutella and a little peanut butter together in a tube, squeeze it out onto a wheat tortilla and add banana slices. Good stuff. :D

In cooler weather when day temps don't get above the 50's and eveings may be around freezing or lower I carry cold cuts, chesee and whole wheat pittas. Beats P&J. Also whipped cream cheese on any kind of bread product. Than gopr, m&ms, bars etc..

My favorite is Rubschlager bread, deli meat of choice and cheese. Rubschlager is that tiny bread that comes in a sleeve. Very easy to pack and doesn't damage or crush easily. Feel like a king eating an actual sandwich (albeit for a tiny person) out there. Hard to find in the south but available at most grocery stores north of the border, usually in the deli section not with the rest of the breads.

I usually do PB on a tortilla. I tried the single serve spam packs but decided cold spam sucks. I have to admit that the hickory smoked tuna on Ritz crackers was yummy this past weekend.
