I have the map, but after our problems last week (that's another thread!), I'm leery of trusting it! Can anyone tell me the mileage from Gooch Gap to Woody Gap? Difficulty of terrain? Any shelters along the way - just a day hike, so that's not terribly important - just curious. Thanks!

There is a bit of a climb about 2 miles after Gooch Gap, but it isn't too bad. After that the trail flattens out and is a pretty easy hike. It is only 3.6 miles from Gooch Gap to Woody Gap. Overall, a pretty easy hike. No shelters in that stretch. The next shelter would be at Woods Hole which is about 7 miles past Woody Gap.

Your map will be fine for that portion. 3.3 miles, (http://www.georgia-atclub.org/description.html) no shelters, easy walk. Take a look (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://stewartholt.csoft.net/AT-Georgia-gm.kmz).

I remember it being a fairly easy section. It's only 4 miles to Woody Gap from Gooch Gap and about 5 from Gooch Mountain Shelter. You shouldn't have any problems. There is also a really nice campsite approximately 2 miles out of Woody Gap with a solid view if you can't make it.

wow, that link is awesome - thank you so much! We should be good to do Gooch as a round trip hike.
