Unless PennDOT has gotten better from when I lived back in PA many years ago. The distinction of the first Underpass will go to NY. they are routing the trail under RT 9W/202. This construction had already begun last year and should be active very soon if not already. This will take the trail under the road at the north side of Bear Mt into the Zoo area.

IIRC, the trail goes under I-89 near W. Hartford, VT also. Probably others that I'm forgetting at the moment.

I am one of the people quoted in the Patriot-News article. What I told them is that I thought this will be the first time the AT will go under a highway via a tunnel. I think that's what Karen Lutz meant too. There are, of course, several places where the AT passes under a highway, but not using a tunnel. Two that leap to mind are (1) under I-70 between Hagerstown and Frederick, MD and (2) under Bernheisel Bridge Rd. near the Scott Farm in PA. The reporter obviously misunderstood what we were saying. As for the comment on when the tunnel will be open for hiking, the estimate we've been given is around mid - October.

Slight Correction the trail goes over I-70 and under Rt 40. Bear Mt is a tunnel not an overpass. It is designed specifficaly for foot traffic. I will give you the fact that it was not created for the sole use of AT hikers it will be used by many people who visit the park. We are keeping the crossing of the Palisades Parkway. It's a form of natural selection taking out the hikers who move too slow across the road.:eek:

The I-89 crossing near W. Hartford is a tunnel. I don't know what else to call it. A culvert, maybe?
