Many will think I'm looney, but who cares, most already do. Keep telling her you'll be back. Animals do not speak english but they do read your spirit. By saying it often you will comunicate it some how.

Seriously though, maybe you could find an old shirt that you wear and let the dog have it, or put it where the dog normally lays. The dog will be able to smell your scent and be comforted. We used to do that when we had to put our dog in the kennel if we went away. It seemed to comfort him.
