Am planning on hiking from Springer Mtn to Hot Springs in early May 09. Any idea on the bugs at that time of year?
I hiked Amicalola to Fontana this past May, started about the 15th. Only applied DEET once, that was on the approach, for gnats. Very few insect problems otherwise.

They can be hit or miss that time of year. Some places may have a small gathering. Another spot may be bug-free. Be prepared, but not concerned.

I was in that area this May and the bugs were only moderately bad in the Smokies in some places. Otherwise, you'll be fine.
I do a week or so down there the 2nd week of May each year and bugs have not been a problem at all. I bring deet but haven't needed or used a drop the last 3 years between Amicalola and Franklin. Gnats were a little pesky this year at Bly Gap, but only when you stopped hiking.
