View Full Version : Lost ID during thru-hike -- how to replace?

Okay, I'm needing some help here to prevent my thru-hike (or more accurately, 2,000-mile section hike) from coming completely to a halt.

So I slogged through Mass and Vermont, pretty much miserable and sick of my hike the whole time. I finally made it to Hanover NH this past Wednesday, and actually felt enthusiastic about hiking for the first time in a month. I was gonna do the presidentials, I was gonna get cold weather (which I like), it was gonna be awesome ...

And then my maildrop, containing new boots and my cold-weather gear didn't show. I waited three days, and still no box; three wasted days, when my time for finishing is dwindling away (I need to be home around 10/1).

So I hitch a ride to the EMS store 10 miles away this afternoon to buy new shoes ... and somehow in the process I manage to lose my wallet. I'm out $150 cash, 2 credit cards, a debit card, a phone card, and (worst of all and the reason for this thread) my Florida Driver's License, which is the only ID I've been carrying.

Oh, and after needing 90 minutes to get a hitch back to Hanover, I found out that EMS somehow gave me one 10 1/2 and one 8 1/2 shoe. Frankly, I'm feeling like I should just head to the interstate and hitch rides back to Florida.

OK, sorry, but I needed to vent.

Anyway. The credit/debit cards can be replaced and replacements sent. But I'm at a loss to figure out what I'm supposed to do to get photo ID (which I will at the very least need to get on a plane back home, and probably before). I can't be the first person this has happened to. Does anyone know how to get replacement photo ID when you are 2000 miles away from your state of residence?

If you are temporarily out-of-state and hold a non commercial driver license and you want a duplicate license to be mailed to you there, you may order on line (https://www7.hsmv.state.fl.us/VirtualOffice/faces/lobby.jsp), by phone (http://www.flhsmv.gov/ddl/phone.html) or by mail. You must also request an address change to your out-of-state address. When you return to Florida you should change the address back to your Florida address. Address changes cost $10.
A duplicate identification card is $10 and you can apply on-line (https://www7.hsmv.state.fl.us/VirtualOffice/faces/lobby.jsp) or in person at a driver license office.

If you are temporarily out-of-state, and want to wait until you return to Florida to get a duplicate driver license, then you can receive a 90-day temporary permit. To request a permit, please write to:

Bureau of Records
2900 Apalachee Parkway, MS 92
Tallahassee, Florida 32399-0575

Requests can also be processed by calling (850) 617-2000 or by e-mai (http://adlts4.hsmv.state.fl.us/ddl/emailsystem/EmailRecordAdd.cfm)l. Please provide your full name, date of birth, social security number, Florida driver license number and an out-of-state address. There is no fee for the permit. When you return to Florida you can be issued a duplicate driver license at the driver license office (http://www.flhsmv.gov/offices/).

I had the same thing happen to me on my thru in PA. Contact your state office related to driver's ID and ask them what you need to send them to have a new ID sent to you. The state of Maine requested I send them a photo copy of my debit card, my signature, and the address I wanted it sent to.

Each state is different, and I am lucky that Maine has a very flexible policy. Just note that it will take 2-3 weeks for them to get you a new one.

I did not have a problem retrieving mail while waiting for the new ID to arrive. Simply tell the PO that you are awaiting your home state to send you a new one. When I did this they simply asked me who the mail was from if I knew the mail was coming.

Feel free to PM me with any specific questions, don't let this end your thru.

It seems that Florida has a law allowing you to receive a temporary ID, Maine does not have anything like that. I suggest going with that, a lot less hassle and they can most likely fax that to you. If you are still in Hanover Monday, ask the Dartmouth Outing Club if the state can fax it to them for you, or ask the post office. If you plan on leaving call the Glencliff Hostel to see if they have a fax machine.

more than likely if your license is found someone will just drop it in the mail to you. Is there someone in FL that can check your mail ?

Call FL license agency and ask them. NC is doing licenses by mail now.

Do you have a passport? Not only can you not get on a plane, but you cannot even rent a car.

This website might help. (don't know if they will mail a duplicate)

If you can't get a replacement mailed general delivery I am reasonably close to Franconia Notch and other points along the way between Hanover and there - you could have it mailed to you C/O my address and I could meet you at at Franconia or leave it with the Rangers for you.

PM me if I can help.

Awesome news -- turns out I was better prepared for my thru-hike than even I thought.

I left an "in case of emergency" box at my brother's house, with stuff like my checkbook and extra credit cards in it ... turns out I had another copy of my license in there. Totally forgot I had it. It'll be sent to me at Glencliff.

Problem solved.

Thanks all for the help -- it's been a panicky day here, but I can sleep now...

Hike on, but first call EMS and have them deliver the correct boots.

Here in Tennessee now, you have to present birth certificate, social security card, and proof of residency (bill or statement with address). I had an out of state license for one year, and I still had to go through all that.

You might be able to get a ID only card. Requirements differ from state to state.
