My autumn issue of the GMC's Long Trail News came today. Apparently the locals and various trail management agencies came to an agreement about limiting motorized access to the Governor Clement Shelter in Vermont. They've installed a gate that will stop unauthorized vehicular access to the infamous party spot from April 15 to September 15 of each year.

Here's the story on the GMC website, with a pic at the bottom of the link:

I wonder how far one has to walk from the gate to the shelter.

exactly, it won't stop much of what goes on there.

Should be torn down. They've torn down other shelters for less reasons. (??) I ate lunch at the place in the rain last year without anyone around and it still gave me the creeps.

I stayed there last year (http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=204987) but prepared to move out on a moment's notice. Aside from a fellow hiker, the only other person to show up (right around dark) was a freelance photographer looking for stories and pics of hikers for the GMC upcoming anniversary book.

It seems that this shelter, in addition to its problematic location, has the longest outstretched roof of any I've seen. Makes for a very dark shelter.

Well, the gate is a start toward improving conditions at the shelter. At least the locals can't drive in any more, and that should stop most of the noctural visitors.

That shelter looked like hell when i was there in June. They should torch that thing for sure. I'd rather sleep in a cardboard box. There's a "secret shelter" like a mile from there anyway. I had lunch at clement and continued on to the Inn. Smithwicks ftw!
