What temp rating bag would you carry?

I spent a week on the AT last year,early-mid October. I used my 30 degree bag and it did fine for the most part. On a night or two my feet got a little cold (not bad though). The weather was fairly mild during my trip. I think a 30 degree bag with socks and/or base layer should handle the "normal" weather during that time.

I'd take my ~20 deg quilt - in my hammock! ;)

Don't have a 30* bag but would use it if I did. Atlanta usually has it's first frost last week of Oct. However, I recall hammocking in 18* last October.

What type of padding would you use down to a possible 20 degrees?

My only bag is WM ultralight super so that is the bag that goes everywhere with me.

Would actually be surprised to see 20 degrees in mid-October in GA. My quilt, with a 3/8" ccf pad, has always been sufficient in Oct. If I expect temps below 40 or so, I'll bring another smaller length of pad to "T" at the shoulders......below freezing, more padding (T'rest, ccf). Generally wouldn't expect below 20. If I see possible temps like that, would prolly bring my 0 deg down bag.

20 deg quilt: 22 ozs (homemade from thru-hiker kit, 13 ozs 800 fill down, 2.5" loft)
target pad: 11 ozs

Georgia is hard to predict -- I've had a 40 degree night in August and I've had a night in November where I was too hot wearing only shorts and a t-shirt and my sleeping bag partially draped over me. If you won't be out for too long, you can check the weather before you go. Otherwise, I would say take a 30 degree bag and some long johns and you should be more than fine.
