Right now, it is pissing down rain here in Chattanooga, and has been since last night. The forecast calls for this storm system to move up the Appalachians and deliver some much needed heavy rain to an area hard hit by drought.

I pity the fool who is out there hiking in the mountains today, because they are going to be awfully soggy. But the mountains are beautiful in the rain. So who's the fool? Probably me, sitting behind a keyboard. :o

I'd be interested to know what the weather is like today in Western NC, NE Tennessee, North Georgia, and SW Virginia.

Watch what you ask for. Even when these storms lose steam over land, they can be very damaging at elevation. Winds can be nasty, and rain can be torrential. Ivan was a nightmare in the Appalachians a few years ago.

I imagine you get a number of fallen trees with a torrential down-pour, even without the winds. Did any area, you know of, experience a mud-slide during Ivan or any other significant storm? (Not including the recent one on Moody Mtn in Maine).

Glad to hear the rain is finally going where it's wanted and needed. I hope this helps end the drought. :) (I know it won't completely, but it should help.)

Gustav looks to be headed more west, at this point. But Fay's a good reminder that predictions mean nothing. Crazy storm.

There were some collapsed side-hill trail sections in the Nantahala after Frances and Ivan. Nothing huge, but it took some engineering by the trail clubs to fix them.

Blowdowns are usually the big issue. After Frances, the access trail to Blue Mtn. Shelter was completely obscured by blowdowns. Even the tree that had the sign pointing to the shelter was down. It looked as if a small twister had gone through.

In the Nantahala, more than $40 million was spent fixing roads that washed out or collapsed.

Now that I think about it, I remember seeing (in 2007) what looked like a mud-slide as I was blue-blazing into NOC (NOBO), if I remember it was at the end of the blueblaze trail that took you to a road/small neighborhood you walked down before getting to a gas/convience store at US 19 (a little east of NOC).

Yes, I failed to mention that, for instance, the Forest Service roads into Deep Gap were closed for months. The Trail held up very well, compared to the roads. You could still walk the AT, but you could not drive near it by some of the usual approaches.

You didn't ask about middle Tennessee, but I'll tell you the weathermen and women tell us we've had the driest August in 60 years. So, thank goodness for some rain at last! Hasn't been too heavy, but has showered several days now.

Last year I lost five trees in my yard alone to the drought. So, I'm very thankful for this rain, and like Mowgli, am wondering what I'm doing sitting at a keyboard.

Fay is just a memory for us... Today was the first day w/o rain in well over a week. The water is beginning to recede.

I sat on the back patio for a while around 2 am Thursday night/morning and watched the trees sway, the rain come in buckets and listen to the howl of the wind. Sweet!

I love storms. (They make me sing.)

We had some really bad storms this afternoon on the backside of this thing. Several possible tornados. And I just got off the phone with a buddy of mine who is religious about his rain gauge. 11 inches since Sunday night when this started and the last time he checked around 6pm. We had two or three really heavy bands roll through since then. I'd say we are pushing 12 or 13 inches right here 20 miles south of the AT in Georgia.

Newscasts are calling for possible flooding in the Mt Rogers area, North Carolina Blue Ridge and Cumberland Plateau. Grandfather Mtn area was already under 4 inches of rainfall.

I am just amazed that 10 yrs ago, East Tennessee/Western Carolina was getting too much rain. Now we are in need of it badly.

I just hope it doesn't ruin the Labor Day weekend. I am heading down to the a number of spots of Nantalhala & Chattahoochee AT this weekend.

In the Nantahala, more than $40 million was spent fixing roads that washed out or collapsed.

I also forgot about the biggie, in terms of damage to the roads:

The Pigeon River rose up and collapsed half of I-40 at about mile marker 4 or 5 in North Carolina. That took a long time, and a lot of money, to repair.

Marta, What was the total rainfall for Charlotte, yesterday? I was in Charlotte last night and had to drive home in it. My rain gauge in Hickory topped out at 5 inches and I think Charlotte may have gotten more.

Marta
08-27-2008, 08:11
During my abortive attempt to drive to work, the radio said Charlotte has gotten more than 8 inches of rain so far. They also had a blurb from the National Weather Service saying that the drought is not over yet.

Really?

Basically, I can't get out of the neighborhood by car. Apparently there are downed trees blocking the roads, and flooded roads, such that traffic is backed up for miles. I circled around and came home. I'll try again in a couple of hours.

Time to go out on the screened porch, lie in the hammock, read, and listen to the rain pound down.

That type of tower is particularly ugly if you ask me. Notice that the pole is brown?

It's supposed to be disguised as a tree. They call it a 'monopine'.

They don't quite pull it off though. These monopines generally stand 150' taller than the surrounding trees.

No idea yet. Probably a bunch. The tower, fence, grounding and compound will likely be fine after dry-up but I suspect all radio equipment, power and telephone demarcs and a few transformers up the line are fried but good.

Seems like this facility was put in a hole, don't they normally go on high ground?

Yep, but there are exceptions. We just build 'em. Somebody else engineers them and those folks don't usually listen to Contractors.

Are yall putting up the monopine on Hwy 29 just north of Charlotte? I've talked to that contractor, he's from around Cleveland Ga.

As for the flooding, I was at the Doral apartments today. Basically almost everyone that had a ground floor apartment lost everything including quite a few cars.
Those that live in Charlotte have probaly heard of it. The property loss to those already poor people is heartbreaking.

It's good to see that old Momma Nature can still pick her targets well . . .

Is Mother Nature an eco-terrorist? Seldom Seen would be proud. Hayduke lives!

our remnant is an orphaned squirrel. It must have gotten washed out of the nest. My dog brought it in yesterday morning. It's about 2 inches long and it's eyes are still closed. My oldest son has been feeding it. It's amazing. It better be a squirrel and not a rat.
