I have no idea if this is true or not, but someone says that there is water:

It would be great if you could check this out and let us know what you find.

I don't know either, but I wonder if that water source is what's shown on this map http://www.whiteblaze.net/atdatabase/topos/AT%20Map%208%20TN-NC%20Sassafras%20Gap.jpg, but I've never seen it.
Thanks for the info y'all, looking foward to a nice trip.

In April, there was water about a half mile down the open field on top of the bald. I didn't get it there, got mine at the shelter .8 miles south of the bald. Everyone else that camped on the bald took the very, very steep side trail down the mountain. They came back up saying it would be better to hike down to the shelter instead.

I hiked that southbound and camped on Cheoah last year. I hauled water from Locust Cove, and that worked out fine.
Cheoah Bald Topo w/water source.
I made the trip on Labor Day weekend. There is a good spring down the slope. A sign in the middle of the AT pointing the way. It could be a haul for the weary, but what is a hill for a climber.
Untill next time Happy Trails :sun
