I've had no problems using the cut off bottom of an aluminum soda can as an Esbit tab holder.
You can use a Pepsi Can stove as an Esbit tab holder as long as you turn it upside down and use the bottom. If you put the Esbit inside the stove, the stove will be ruined from all the nasty residue clogging up the jet holes.
