I'm on the way home from a hike on the trail in Maine. Two of my meals really hit the spot, so I thought I'd let you know.

1.Spagetti and meat sauce.
I precooked the whole wheat noodles and dehydrated them. I dehydrated regular meat sauce on parchment paper (Ragu augmented with hamburger) and then ground it in a food processor.

It turned out very tasty.the other hikers smelled the aromas jealously. <G>

2. salmon chipotl mango with Lipton Broccoli noodles in cream sauce. The salmon was doctored enough to nicely augment the salmon taste (which I don't really love).

Just to share my experience, I hope this helps someone.

PS dehydrating was done with a cheap single speed dehydrater, Conventional wisdom says you need temperature control and a fan, but my results were fine. I'm fairly sure you could even use the oven on a low setting with the door propped open a bit.

In several dehydrators adding a fan only added hours to the process.

We always freeze a steak and it is thawed by the second night out. A good dried potato mix and a nice cab round out the meal.
