Surely something in the "100 Mile Wilderness"?
N of newfound gap in SMNP is the longest section W/O roads so it would be a shelter in the middle of that

Except that the middle-most shelter - TriCorner Knob - is still only 16 miles from Davenport Gap. But in the southern half of the Smokies, Derrick Knob is the farthest from any road (Newfound Gap, 18 miles).

nothing is very far from a road in the so-called 100 mile wilderness
Wasn't Whitley Gap Shelter the shelter furthest from the trail?
I believe it was 1.2 miles off the AT

Established campsites in the 100 mile wilderness were fairly near the trail, actually.

That would be my guess at the farthest shelter.

UGH, don't remind me.....I spent a week there one night. Had to hike out and up 1.2 miles with frozen boots. It is a nice site though and the water was really good back on 2000.

I think this thread needs some clairification.
By the most remote shelter/campsite are we talking about a shelter/campsite furthest off the AT or furthest from roads/civilization?
If it's a site furthest from the AT; I'd say Whitley Gap, I'm guessing.
I don't have any idea of the most remote shelter with respect to roads/civilization. However, something else to consider, not all roads are the same, for instance you can have an old forrest road near a site, but still be pretty far from civilization. In other words just because you're near a road doesn't mean you're near civilization.

The water was good there in 2006 as well. I would say it is one of the better springs in Georgia.
