I know most of the hikers here probably do not own a Wii. But I am sure there is a handful that do or know someone who does. Today as I was thinking about my pack weight the idea popped into my head to use the game Wii Fit to weigh my pack.

If you are not familiar with this game, it was Nintendo's lousy attempt (IMO) to create a fitness video game. The entire game revolves around a "Balance board" which is basically a scale that can detect weight and movement. In the game you can practice Yoga, run in place and do a number of other activities. Their are plently of videos on Youtube if you are interested.

So what I did was weigh myself normally and then again with my pack. This worked great and now I don't have to drive to the post office and stand in line.

The other interesting thing the Balance board does is, it tells you if you are distributing your weight evenly on your right or left foot. Now when I weighed myself minus backpack my distribution was Left 49%/ Right 51%.
With Pack it changed to Left 48.5%/ Right 51.5%. I know this is probably a stretch but it could help detect an imbalance in the way the backpack is packed. I would say maybe a 3% change in weight distribution might warrant an inspection in the way you pack your bag

Anyway...the scale is really accurate. I would say more accurate then the average bathroom scale. But that doesn't really matter since you are using the same scale twice.

Hopefully this is useful to someone other than myself. It made my day and I now know my pack weight. 18lb base weight BTW :sun

That's awesome. Who says Backpackers are not a resourceful bunch.

Curious - does it weigh in both ounces and grams? Thanks,
