Thinking about doing another big section next year, this time from Katahdin to New York. Anyone leaving K in July? What do you think is the best time to leave Katahdin in terms of pleasant weather, avoiding blackflies, and mud to some degree. Cheers.
July is when most hikers leave K... of course this year there was plenty of rain from mid July to mid August! Don't think that's usual... I think August would be better and since you're just going to NY you'd be done in about three months even if you went slow
I have hiked Maine this year and two years ago in July and didn't have any trouble with blackflies. Mosquitos are the biggest thing and once you get past the Bigelos they start to calm down. I think all the nasty stuff with bugs, mud and lots of dangerous fords happens in June. I say go for it in July with the extra long days and the sobo "crowd".
I met you somewhere south of the NOC this year and met your brother there. How far did you go this time?
